Soon to be chicken owner

Enjoy the chickens!

We’ve got the area all prepped. Planning to get the coop Thursday, then work on fencing in the run. Have to secure the gaps in the sides and bottom of the white fence, and then make a roof and front enclosure. It will be from the end of our garage (green) and extend to the neighbors carriage house.

That looks like a great area!

We spent a good part of the weekend muscling the coop into place, with the help of some Egyptian era technology. Next step is to fence in and secure the run area. I figured the windows and nest boxes ought to face South to get the most light and warmth in the New Hampshire winter. Does that make sense?

We got the girls yesterday! They are lovely, and seem friendly and happy! We are still finishing the run - adding some roofing for rain and snow protection, and chicken wire over the rest to prevent aerial predators. Their entire coop and run has one foot of hardware cloth buried under ground, then the other part screwed to the fence or coop base. We have seen skunks and possum in our neighborhood, so we are making sure nothing gets a free chicken dinner. The girls appear to be different ages, from what I can tell by looking at their combs. We got them from our local Agway, and they had about 15 of them in a chain link fence area. A couple of teenager employees went in, grabbed them by their feet and stuffed them all in to a box. When I got them home the "big sister" as I've been calling her, was sitting on top of the other two. I think they are processing what kind of paradise they have been transported to...

They are very cute!

They seem to be warming up to us and are getting into a routine. I am amazed that they go back to their run when it is dusk, then a while later, go into the coop. I think they are beginning to associate me with food, as they follow me around whenever I am near them. Their favorite spot in the yard so far is under our Lily Magnolia tree. They spent the last 3 afternoons there, sand bathing, napping and pecking around for stuff. It is close to their run, and it is funny to see the oldest, Ginger, bolt from the tree to the run when it is dusk, then the others, Yolko Ono and Rosey, run after her. They really are sweet and beautiful!
