Do the berries look like this?

Elderberries make great wine! I hope that is what you are dealing with. Pokeberries on the other hand are terrible tasting and can be toxic, I know I ate some years ago. Boy did they taste like 💩 Elderberry has little bumps all over the trunk and stems and if you cut off a stem it is hollow in the center, we used to make slide whistles out of them when we were kids. Welcome to BYC! pleased to meet you and thanks for joining us.

Elderberry! They are fine, not the best raw for humans, although have some medicinal qualities and are fantastic for a country wine.
Although the plant can contain small amounts of cyanide, and can cause toxicity build up, there seems to be no definite answer on wether it’s safe for hens or not. Personally, if it were to be their permanent residence, I would err on the side of caution.

The best way to keep hens, is to keep them on the move if you have the space as this is how they would be naturally. In this system I would have no worries about them foraging a few berries here and there.
