Hello all. My name is Sandy and we are going to build a chicken coop to raise chickens in the spring. We live in Pueblo West and need some ideas on what kind of chickens would be best. We would prefer brown eggs so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Welcome to the site! You will find tons of information about chickens here. I got my chickens from Meyer Hatchery. Their website will give you tons of chickens to choose from with detailed info on the breeds. Here's a tip: beware of chicken math! The amount of chickens you start with will never be enough! :)

Welcome to BYC!

Couple questions I always ask to help get friends started...

1. What are your plans for the chickens (showing, pets, food...)
2. How much room do you have for them (whether to get bantams or LF-large fowl)
3. What type of coop do you have (some chickens do not do well in foul weather and some are more hardy)
4. What type of area do you live in? (lots of neighbors or lots of acres)
5. How many eggs are you wanting per year (just a few to incubate or a bunch to sell to neighbors)

These are great for information:

Great to have you aboard and enjoy BYC!

Barred Rocks are very popular, they lay on average of 250+ brown eggs/year, they are also big enough to eat, are very docile, and can make great pets as well.
