Hello, I'm new to backyard chickens and going to be a new owner of baby chicks Soon! This is the first time I've raised and kept chickens. We're very excited and nervous at the same time. I've done a ton of reading about chic
Chickens and it's a lot of info. Backyard Chickens looks like a great place for any questions or help we will need along the way!

I'm looking at Rhode Island Reds and White Leghorns. Plymouth Rocks also.

Hello and welcome to BYC and congrats on your new project.

Here’s a link to the Articles section - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/ There you’ll find lots of information on almost every aspect of keeping chickens - from coop building ideas, to incubating eggs.

There’s a link on the page above to the Learning Centre - it’s a great resource. If you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

Each week, various topics are discussed, which can also be a great resource - https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/topic-of-the-week-thread-archive

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area - Find Your State Thread

Welcome to BYC! We hope you enjoy your time here. It is great to see you stopping by before you have your first flock. We want you to be successful here so I want to take a moment to review a quick checklist of questions so our expert greeters can share any concerns you may have or not considered yet. But first, we need some location specific information about you. Would you be so kind as to edit in your location information(Account->Personal Details->location(fill in the blank)->then save button at the bottom)?

#1-Where are you setting up the brooder? Insde or out?
#2-What kind of heat source will you be using?
#3-If you are planning on feeding anything but Chick starter what is it? And have you purchased chick grit? Layer feed is for actual layers not chicks who will eventually lay.
#4-Have you built your coop yet?
#5-Are you planning on sending us pictures when you get your chicks? We would appreciate that.

Please also look up "pasty butt" as you will need to do butt checks daily for the first few days up to first 2 weeks or so. Untreated it can become life threatening.
Finally, relax they aren't as fragile as you think, and they will always be smarter chickens than you or I ever will be. They know what to eat when to drink and will not always do what you expect on your schedule.

Welcome again to BYC!:frow:welcome

Greetings and welcome to BYC! So glad you joined us. There's a wealth of info, knowledge and experience shared in the multitude of threads. Browse around and see what interesting stuff you can find. By all means post away when the desire strikes you, especially if you have questions (provide as much detail/info as possible and pictures truly help)... With all the great folks here, generally someone will respond in no time at all. Please make yourself at home!

Oh, if you haven't done so already, PLEASE put at least your general location in your profile. It could be very important if/when you ask for or offer help or advice. You know, climate issues and such. I recommend at least your state as most folks won't be able to figure out where if you put anything more specific (county, town, street, etc) by itself. Old folks like me :old will never remember & look there first. To add it, mouse hover over Account top right and a drop down will appear. Click on Personal Details and scan down. You'll see the spot for Location. Then go to the bottom and save changes. Thanks! Hope you enjoy the site!

G’Day from down under nschenzel :frow Welcome!

Very exciting :clap

I do hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

I see Pork Pie mentioned that BYC has Topic of the Week discussions which I have found to be a great resource, informative and sometimes entertaining; so definitely worth checking out. These in particular may be of interest to you:
Topic/Question of the week - Brooding and supplementing heat for chicks
Topic of the Week - Raising Chicks
Topic of the Week - Getting Started, Keeping Chickens
Topic of the Week - Keeping the Flock Safe from Predators

You might also be interested in downloading this free e-book My First Year With Chickens

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock when they arrive, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Best wishes and good luck!
