Well I’m about certain my Pekins Zig and Zag are drake and Duck which means I really should add at least one more female...my dilemma...the stores around here are no longer carrying ducklings and I’ve pretty much decided that I will probably try to refrain from the store chains anyways..so I am looking for ducks mine are currently approximately 4/5 weeks old..I am open to either babies, same age or so and even adults...the breeds I’m really liking are Silver Appleyard, Anacona, and the Welsh’s..I would also be open to others and Pekins especially if they need a home..I’ve considered ordering a couple (have to order at least two) but for guarantee female babies I’m looking at $80 and I figured I’d try here first!! I live in Defiance, Ohio I am willing to travel up to idk 4 or so hours round trip to get a female or two..are their any breeders or small duck farmers within my area that has any available? I know finding ducks is harder than the drakes..thanks everyone!!

Also you could drive over to meyer hatchery in Ohio. They have a 3 bird minimum but it could save you in shipping cost if you drove there. It might been something to look into. www.meyerhatchery.com

I live near Toledo Ohio on the Michigan boarder side and it was going to be a 2 drive for me, but i decided go else where because i only wanted 2 females.

I have a silver appleyard 9 weeks old and i love her!! but she is sassy. i have been told that pekins are a partial to only mating with white ducks so i really don't know if my male pekin will mate with her, just something to think about when considering adding more to your flock.

Toledo your only 45 or so away from me...I’m in Defiance..my brother lives in Toledo near the Michigan side only couple mins to Michigan from his house..yes Meyer farms is an idea was only wanting one to two females but what’s one more :love lol...just gotta get the man on board with three haha...wish me luck...there’s really no rush though I suppose they are only 5 weeks old..but I do want to get them sometime this season

My local Family Farm did bring in ducklings both Pekin and Rouens but I chance not getting females if I go that way..really don’t wanna end up with another drake as he would become supper which I’m not against and plan on doing in future but not with the babies I hand raise :hit...once I have breeding going and mama raised ones boys will surely end up on the table...I know there’s no real way to tell that young but I’m considering getting two of the smallest rouens and praying..I don’t feel comfortable vent sexing quite yet though I’ve seen it done a few times...just scared to hurt their tiny little bodies:confused:

I'm possibly going to have Welsh ducklings on May 19th or so. I've got 9 eggs in the incubator and am looking to keep two female my self. So I've got extra. I'm in Morrow Oh.
That would be PERFECT!!! And you are definitely within a reasonable distance not far at all...I would love to purchase a female possibly two from you when they arrive!! I’ve got my boy and he stays lol he’s my little dude but he’s actually a BIG boy he’s huge I’m starting to think he may be a jumbo Pekin he’s just so much bigger than my little girl..is there a way to tell for sure if he is? Probably by weight once he’s fully grown? I’m still learning on ducks though I’ve had chickens and many other parrot type birds and am finding a lot of similarities between them lol I guess a birds a bird in a lotta ways lol..I also wonder if by chance you know of Ohio has a chickenstock? I’m planning on posting a thread in the forum just haven’t done so yet..but I would love to attend one..maybe plan one if one isn’t in the works already..well if any ohioians are interested anyway...I’ve been reading the chickenstock threads and it’s definitely something I want in on..thinking about going to the one in Michigan next month..

Cool, I'll keep you posted on if i have a successful hatch or not! This is my second attempt in a homemade incubator. And I'm new to ducks too. I had 4 welsh and 3 Peking. And I'm down to 2 welsh and 2 Peking. One of my Peking became very ill after we first brought them home from the local feed store. And the welsh I bought from a farmer in Kentucky, they were a 1 year old already. But we lost one to a hawk and one to a raccoon. So I tried to get my duck to set a nest. And she never went broody. She had 20 eggs laid and never a sign of broody. So I took the 10 freshest eggs and put them in my home made incubator. We took one out that was a dud after candling the eggs on day 6. So were down to 9 eggs. But as I said this is my second try. I tried my home made incubator out with two eggs from my ducks that got killed. But on day 18 the incubator got too hot and killed them! I'm keeping a very close eye on this try! So hopefully I'll have 9 ducklings! I've read that welsh are easy to sex by color of their bill when first hatched. So we should be able to get you two female. As for your Peking mine are about 12 weeks old now and still dont have a sex feather but I know one is a Male because hes flirting with my female Welsh, and fighting with my drake welsh. Were about to harvest our Peking. So I'm not really worried about mine being male or female. My flock is going to be 1 welsh drake, 3 welsh ducks and 2 cayuga ducks.

Oh no so sorry for your loss:hugs.my Pekins are about 5/6 weeks the female quacks it’s a definite quack/honk sound but my guys is so not.. though I’ve read females are louder and talk more? Not quite the case here.. whiles she’s loud she’s quieter doesn’t talk quite as much as him... he’s a talker every time he sees me, every time their free ranging and he can’t see me or wants to know where I am he’s quite noisy lol...I have plans to possibly try incubating next season hopefully acquire some eggs of the breeds I want..I’ll have my fingers crossed and praying that all turns out good and healthy!! What day are they on? I’ve just started reading up and following some of the incubating threads..so I don’t know a lot about it as yet..I’d love to keep in touch and follow how incubation is going...and since I’m off due to neck surgery I can come get the girls ASAP lol I’d love for them to imprint on me haha..
