Sorry I couldn't help myself - I got my first egg today! A perfectly formed, beautiful egg laid IN the nesting box by my Xena. It's substantial - I haven't opened it yet - but it doesn't feel like a fairy egg. She's a red/brown sex-link (golden comet maybe?) and the first hen in my first flock to lay an egg! We got them as chicks via a friend's hatchery order on April 11, they were probably 2-3 days old, so she's a little over 20 weeks old at this point. My Lakenvelder is also showing signs - her comb and wattles are rosy and she's squatted for me and is also very interested in the nesting boxes. What fun! Now - what do you all use to write on the egg to show the date? Pencil? the egg was already dry when I picked it up out of the nesting box. The little speck of white is a piece of paper - I used shredded paper in the nest box and this little piece stuck to it, brushed right off though. It's nice and clean so I won't wash it, but I will put it in the fridge because I'm in S Florida and even with the A/C on it's in the high 70s in here. Although I'm thinking I won't need to write the date on this one - I think I will go and crack this baby open for my brunch right now!
