I just had to make an excuse to go down and check things out, thankfully there was a parcel in the mail. Well, came back with 4 brown layers, have no idea what they are, but they are so pretty. My daughter cried and cried yesterday over the sick little chick that we had nursed for a week that ended up dying. No wonder it did, at a week old it was literally 1/3 to 1/4 of the size of these chicks that are only a couple days old. Anyways, I ended up cancelling my order for next month since I've got 11 in the bator as well. I was starting to wonder if maybe I would end up with too many to fit in our little 8x8 coop.

Here's a pic of them, just put in their brooder and they are eagerly eating and drinking lots. I will start working on a bigger brooder this weekend as these girls are huge already! If anyone can tell me what they are, I would love to know!

Congrats on your new babies! The picture is a little fuzzy, maybe they are buff orpingtons?

your avatar!! I did some pysanky for a while but I never made anything that pretty!

I think they might be Buff Orpingtons as well, but I'm no chick expert. They're awfuly cute, though.

Oh BO's would be wonderful! They are gorgeous birds. Sorry the pic is fuzzy, it was taken through the plastic tub. I'll take more later, but I'm going to give them a rest since I literally just got in the door and put them in it. I have a huge bench style rubbermaid tub here somewhere.....

Yeah, my avatar is of a blue duck egg that I decorated earlier this year. It is pretty design of lobelia flowers, so delicate! If you'd like to check out some other designs, you can go to my website. It's my passion, I'm a stay at home mom and it's my only income. Eggs are literally everywhere and I though raising chickens was a natural progression. Only thing, I didn't realize that it would become yet another of my obsessions!

I sure will, I put them in a new brooder that I made today. I'll get the pics up later tonight or tomorrow, but now I'm going to the drive in!

Oh, I've got a question. They have been pigging out ever since I brought them home, so much so that their crops are totally jammed packed and sticking out. Is this normal? Seems like they should take a break from eating before they explode!

My new chickies have a new brooder, made out of a large plastic bin that I cut the side out of. There are three that looks almost exactly the same, large, laid back and they have wing and tail feathers. The only different one is darker in color, smaller, really small wings and no tail feathers. It seems that it is often off on it's own so I was thinking it was a runt. But...it seems to be the one that alerts the others, it is the one that tries everything first and the other 3 follow. Do you think it could be a roo or just more assertive in nature? It is the first single pic.
