Hey hey ! So Im not "new" to chickens or poultry in general I grew up with chickens pea fowl and quail but never dealt with the finer minutiae of when things "go wrong". We live in West Texas in the permian basin so, in the desert. We're already raising Nigerian dwarf goats and out here there is a serious problem with overpopulation of strays and dog dumping. Where I live in particular our community loves to dump their unwanted animals so we also have five dogs and continually take in others who show up, get them vet care and vaccines and spay or neuter and find them homes. Our shelters are constantly full and I guess our whole life is full of animals 😅
One of our neighbors about 1/4 mile away or so treats their flock horribly and doesn't have them protected by fencing or anything at all. So we frequently find chickens and peafowl in the road 😞
A semi truck happened to pick up a hen yonder way some.sory of Easter egger I believe on the truck grill of all things, he stopped his truck close to our house to save her God bless him! , and she somehow survived. Birds don't like to be alone and wed already built our fenced pen planning to raise our own anyway so I ordered 6 more and here we are, one grown hen giving us 1-3 eggs/day and six 2-3 week old chicks.

3 mottled houdans who aren't the most prolific layers but my daddy was from Puerto Rico and that video of a silkie or maybe a houdan bragging about being Puerto Rican lays me out every time I see it.
And then we have 3 f1 egg layer crosses.

I just turned 45 and had to retire very very early from being an RN when I was diagnosed with MS about three years ago, so my animals have helped me learn how to be alive In a different way. Thanks for having .me I have so much to learn and my Mammaw and Pappaw aren't here to teach me all I refused to learn as a stupid kid growing up with them. I'm originally from Virginia so West Texas is still a little foreign to me even after 20 some odd years but it's home now

Thank you for sharing! My mom had MS for many years so I am familiar with it. So glad you are caring for animals and now have chickens!

Welcome to BYC!
