Why do you raise chickens?

  • I want high quality protein from animals that live normal lives instead of in factory farms that drive them insane.
  • I want to decide what they eat since I eat what comes out of them.
  • I want a food source that isn't subject to commercial supply chains.
Unfortunately I ended up with a flock that doesn't get along and egg production that has dropped off to 0-2/day so I have to buy lower quality commercial eggs anyway. :(

To take care of them.

I miss taking care of livestock like I did growing up on a working farm. All the aspects: deciding what they need, figuring out how to give it to them, choosing which and how many to get, naming them, tending them, watching them interact with each other and their environment, ...

Fresh eggs and fertilizer for the garden are bonuses but still only a tiny fraction of the reason.

It was never about the eggs, and surely not meat. I just wanted chickens and chose silkies. Advance about a decade, and I'm now a well-known silkie breeder in our state. They are pets to me.

It's sure been nice not having to buy an egg for nearly a decade though!

I got chickens this time (had some many years ago in NM) because I moved to MO and discovered that ticks are a fact of life here. I got chickens primarily to deal with the ticks. But also, of course, for eggs. Was not expecting to fall in love with them for their beauty, variety and personalities. I am now about to embark on the journey of breeding in order, hopefully, to sell chicks, eggs and started pullets (Ameraucanas). All thanks mostly, if not entirely, to BYC.

I got chickens for fresh eggs, and as stated above, from a source that lives in a natural, healthy environment - free from commercial confines. Fertilizer for the garden is the added bonus. Yes, they are pets, as well. All were named by the kids (and the daughter used to sneak them in the house). 🙂
