My parents place, a predator got himself into their pigeon loft killed everything but left the guineas alone? There was a fisher here that one of the dogs caught attacking a swan. She killed the fisher we got it taxidermized. For a animal that weighs so little they are big wow. But anyways. The animals wil use trees and wont set foot on the ground. Winter is here dogs go inside. IS there anything we can do to convince the predator to go to the ground? Those big hava heart traps. Wee set them on the roof if the coon or whatever is big it will smash himself to the ground. THe dog can get out if we leave the back door an inch open. But the predator didnt show. I set the trap many times on the ground and he wont come or we just trap my cat. Is there anything coons or other predators just cant resist? I also thought here (upstate new york area for americans) Most would be hibernating? SO guineas not touched. Killed a pigeon but hardly ate it? IT has to be really agile because that coop is 18 feet long and keeps going. 8 feet up. Also a light is on and that is a racing pigeon. I was thinking mink but the animal is still strong enough to knock over a big cage. The outsdie of the coop goes deep into the ground like a foot so digging doesnt work. Still cant see where he got in from. There is a tiny hole we did find and patched that up. But its so small a cat could not get through.WHen in there whatever it was went on a rampage. YET he stayed far away from the guineas????

IT has not come back but again but the back door is unlocked. I put up a game camera and nothing but my hyena of a dog acting out. I did more work and sealing around the coop. Set traps cages. Nothing. But the dog has been opened the door at night (freezing us all) and trying to catch something. But whatever it is. It has not gone near the traps or set foot in the yard. It killed a rooster and a pigeon. But did not eat them. It ages half the pigeon but left the wings. It did not touch any other birds. Weasel, we did have but my cat caught that so fast we had it taxidermized. One thing is no rats around anywhere. I know my cat was killing a lot of them but there are zero, not a trace not even a shred of rats or mice. My cats were the only ones going after full-grown rats and killing a few a week. I never saw any of the other chicken owners having dogs or cats so rats grew huge populations and sizes and started eating their birds. SO whatever it was it took out every rat? No bird seed has been touched for weeks. The racing pigeons it caught were roosting on a pole. So that night he dragged the one into the coop to eat some of it and then dropped the rest inside the coop. They were not even my pigeons. The man across the street has been having serious rat issues so his pigeons have all been flying to my place because the rat issue isnt that bad with two cats always kiling them and raiding their nests. He actually gave up on keeping his birds it got too bad. I had them under control but something made them vanish.

Maybe now it knows there is a dog on the property it may be quite awhile before it shows up but could be lurking and waiting for a chance when it doesn't detect the dog. My guess it could be a fox. I had a fox kill some birds and not touch them. I did use one of the bodies as bait and caught the fox.

if all the sudden you dont have rats....a weasel may have moved in.
this is good and bad news.
good because you now have no rats.
bad because your chickens are at risk.
instead of focusing on killing the predator, you should beef up your coop and make it weasel proof. most of the risk is at night when weasel hunt.
the article i have attached will tell you all you need to know about weasel.
they are a beneficial critter.
myself and my chickens co-exist with our weasels. my only problems i had were when my coop was not secure.
sounds like your coop is open if something is killing pigeons and dragging them inside the coop to eat them. just saying.....
good luck!
