She pipped yesterday, today she is out of her egg but there's a glob hanging out of her bottom, it appears to be tethering her and she's can't move about. Do I cut this off or pull this out? What is it? Does she need it? If I cut it off, is she supposed to have what's remaining "inside" her for sustenance? If I pull it out and free her, am I taking out a vital organ? She's peeping up a storm and trying to break free of this "tether". PLEASE ADVISE

Sounds like she has hatched with unabsorbed yolk if it's a glob and not just cords. You may need to put her in a cup or small container so she can't move and damage the yolk sac. Hopefully doing this will give her chance to absorb it. You shouldn't cut anything away from her there could and probably still will be blood vessels there too. Cutting anything could cause her to bleed put.

Have a read of this article, there is a section in it on unabsorbed yolk and what to do.

Wishing you the very best of luck with her :fl

Thank you!! I called my sis-in-law, a vet. She recommended tying it off with a piece of dental floss, waiting 15 minutes or so, then snipping off the glob below the dental floss. Which is what I did. Now the chick can walk around without being tethered, and she's doing great!

Of note, this was not a yolk sac. This was just "gunk", but there were tiny vessels attached, so I was concerned about the bleeding. But the dental floss did the trick.

I appreciate the feedback, and hope this helps someone else! All the best.
