Sounds Cortnix Quails Make

My quail are now 6 weeks old and for the past couple of days I have been hearing the males start calling. It is a neat sound. This is my first quail to hatch and they are so neat. I have them a new hutch for outside but I haven't got it put together yet. I hope to do that sometime today. I have one that hatched and his feet were missed up. We keep him and he had one foor that feel off and the other one the toes feel off. He is doing good now that they have fallen off. He is so cute. Gets around fine and doing great.

yep they are pretty facinating!

I finnally got to hear the males courting call upclose and personal at the breeders I went to tonight.

It is really neat and hard to explain.

My coturnix quails at home don't call yet because they were too young during breeding season to call, and then when they were old enough tehy were already outside under natural temps and lighting so they wont court until spring...i can't wait!

That one with the toes missing sounds sad but atleast he's getting around well!

my males crow all day and sometimes at night.. and to me it sounds like someone sneezing and gargling water at the same time lol.. it's cute though i love hearing them

I still have mine in the garage. I just got them a new pen for outside. I put them out the other day when it was warm and they loved it. I just don't know if it is safe to leave them out yet or not.

I'm thinking about getting quail. I live in suburbia and council rules won't let me have roosters - and I'm only allowed 5 hens max at that. There is no ruling about quails though. I'm wondering how noisy the male calls are? Would you say they sound much like 'wild' birds so my neighbors wouldn't be able to pick them out? Bwok bwoks in the city is unmistakable and my hens do make that I've laid an egg cackle so the neighbors know that I keep chickens. A rooster call is also a standout - and really loud so you can't miss it in the city. I'm just wondering if I would need to lock the male quails up at nights to reduce the noise to my neighbors - kinda like how people put roosters in those special boxes at nights so they can't crow/reduce their crowing sound.

I am not sure if they sound a lot like the other birds or not. The males can get loud but it sure doesn't sound like a rooster. The females aren't at all. I really don't think your neighbors would know what the sound was and where it is coming from. Mine don't call all the time. Just once in awhile and if they weren't mine I would wonder what that sound was. I think you would be fine getting them.

I think you'd be fine too. Its an unusual crow. Otherwise I don't really hear them.

When i was growing up, we used to have Bob Whites running through our yard (more vacant land then in town) and we lived next to a field.

If I was in an apartment even, knowing what I know now, I wouldn't hesitate to get cortunix quail. Plus they're sweet and friendly and tasty.

If you want to hear them call, just move their females to the other side of the room and leave them there. They will call to their ladies til you put them back. No matter, day or night.

Thanks for those replies. I will definitely start with quail soon. I was a novice with the whole chicken thing and got 2 hens thinking that they'd be quiet and unobtrusive. And by and large they are, but they can get noisy when they do that egg laying song, then it's unmistakable that I've got chickens in the backyard - and it's not just a soft cluck cluck - it's like a tell the whole world I've laid an egg BWOK! I even went to YouTube to search for quail calls and got to listen to a few to check up on the noise level. They probably sound okay in the day but not at 3am in the morning. We have noisy birds where we live eg noisy mynahs, Cockatoos but these are 'native' birds so I think whilst they are 'noisy', because we 'hear' them so often, it's almost like background noise that you don't 'hear'. I knew we were in trouble when my little girl came home from school and announced to me that we were the ONLY family in the WHOLE school that kept chickens.

Now to convince her that it's okay to eat the animals we keep in the backyard. She was positively mortified when I told her that one day when Anabel stops laying, she'd end up in the stock pot - we CAN'T EAT Anabel!
