Sour Crop Adivce Please

Hi there,

First, I know there are a lot of posts on this, put just looking for some human contact on this one. I noticed a year old hen today separating herself from the flock. She is still able to walk around and roost, but she is not interested in food or table scraps (which she normally loves). Although she did pick a few things here and there in the yard. Was able to pick her up right away, not normal for her. She seems sleepy. But her crop feels like a soft half inflated squishy balloon. The others in the flock feel small (it's 8 am) and have grit and what not in them. But the big clue is her face stinks like nasty rotten gunk. I have isolated her with no food or water at this point. I plan to go massage her crop upright. I am willing to try to make her vomit (it thats what you would call it), but I will admit I am nervous about aspirating her or causing lung problems. Is that easily caused? I suppose if I don't do it, she might get worse... Advice please. Probably gonna watch some videos on it too.

I feel like such a dink that I am noticing this now. Clearly this didn't happen over night if her crop has gotten to the point of fermenting. What is my timeline here? Is she on the downhill? Can she recover from this with some at home treatment? Also planning to put acv in the water once it is safe for her to drink...

Update: I did tip her up and like a 1/8 cup of nasty liquid came out. Her crop is smaller now, but still feels balloon like. But I can feel like a mash of food in there, no big hard clumps. But because I think I got all the liquid out, the mash has no way to budge. I have her isolated with some acv in her water, and a yogurt olive oil mix. I am giving her a rest until this evening when I get home from work. Can she possible drop whats in her crop? Or should I consider flushing her crop with a bit of water to get it out? How long does this take to cure? She is alert and was resisting treatment, so she is still a fighter.

I am just reading your post today. You did the right thing by isolating your hen and keeping her just with water and no food at all. I hope she is still OK, I found this article very helpful when I had a hen with impacted crop, please read it

Do not give her any more oil or yogurt, it might make things worse.

First thing is to cut out the table scraps....I have never had the issue but I also never feed scraps....Chickens can and will gobble as much as they can if allowed and they are not thinking that they better get some grit too.....Once a week I toss out two whole apples or some type of veg for them...I toss a little scratch when the are foraging just to make life interesting...Other than that, mine eat Chicken food ....Hope your Bird gets better quickly....
