Hello,

I am new to keeping chickens, and this is the first issue I’ve had to deal with. I have a hen that has lost a bunch of weight and I believe she has sour crop. The crop is like a water balloon and when I massaged it she “burped” and the smell was rancid. I have an idea on how to treat it, but I’m worried she’s so thin that she won’t make it. She did eat a bit this morning but I don’t want her to starve either. PLEASE HELP! She is isolated and I’ve been giving her garlic water. No food since being isolated.

Welcome to BYC. I would stop the garlic, but give her some water with electrolytes. Sour crop can occur with a previous impacted crop. Crop problems frequently are because of an underlying issue, such as reproductive problems, cancer, ascites, or other issues. Here is a good article about crop problems:

Today her crop felt quite empty. I could feel some small little gritty bits in there, but otherwise no bloating or fluid. I gave her water with some sav a chick in it as well as a small portion of scrambled eggs with a few crunched up soldier fly larvae. She is very very malnourished and I’m really upset I didn’t see it sooner. I’m worried she’ll starve before she gets better…
