sour crop... most tramatic thing... Surgery!!--UPDATE- wrong twice!!

Well Update. I put my americauna girl back out yesterday. She passed whatever was stuck and was having normal poops and had an empty crop. She was very happy to get out. Was enjoying the nice weather today foraging about. I put my red girl out this afternoon. Her crop was emptied and she was getting very hungry. Thought my toes would be tasty!! I put her out to join her sisters in the yard where she quickly started foraging. I will keep an eye on them over the next few days to make sure all is running properly. Glad no surgeries were required. Water with apple cider vinegar, yogurt, kale broth and some apple sauce. Thanks for the help.

Well apparently I was wrong...... went out this morning and found my red girl fluffed up, eyes droopy and crop full. I tried to make her puke but she was getting weaker. I enlisted the help of my husband and got a few supplies from work. I read up on the procedure.....it was so horrible for her and the both of us. She certainly felt it.

I was able to remove a lot of grass/hay and seeds. I rinsed it out as best i could, stitched her back up and washed her chest with iodine and water. i currently have her wrapped in a blanket in my arms. I hope for the best but it was so traumatic. If she makes it today and through the night i will feel more hope.... poor soul.

Take their food away at night and then feel the crop in the morning. If it completely empties through the night, they're alright

Don't use too much olive oil because it can be detrimental to their health.

Thanks, She had a little sleep and is now preening her feathers. I have her in a box so she can move around but not too much. When should I give her water or food?? I assume only liquid or softs to start.

Well she survived the night. Still bright. Gave her some kale broth with some good bacteria added in. Cleaned the incision site again. Crop feels quite flat. lots of poops. Will give her today to recover more and then add back in a few more liquids or soft foods. Here is hoping.

BUMP- well red girl seems to be doing fairly well. Gonna try increasing her diet a bit today. But my Americauna who had seemed good all week is sour again!!! GAHHH.. you were right common coop!!! I thought she might be going bad again last night so I took away their food so I could check crops before they got eating.... low and behold she was all full and sour. Got her to puke again. Have her in the house and my husband is makeshifting a duplex sick bay. Want to be able to keep them seperate to monitor voids and for different diets. I will try her again on the liquids and try a bit of oil again... I did not want to do surgery again, but if necessary I will!!! GAGGHHHH.

Well I had to do another surgery. This one went better. I guess I know more what I was dealing with. I removed a glob totaling somewhere between a golf ball and a tennis ball of straw and grass.... Need to change the bedding... oh why do they eat some of the stuff they do....She did fair during it. I have her still isolated and only have given her yogurt with buttermilk and some good bacteria. Will slowly taper up her diet. Hope she heals well. As an aside I note that my other girl is doing the head bobbing thing like they were doing when they were sour. Her crop does not feel full. Just soft from the soft diet she is getting. I added some grit into both their spaces too. She also passed a glob of ? round worm this morning. I am not sure why they died and came out...... has got me searching for worming options. I don't know whether they just died or that the mix of yogurt, buttermilk, acidophilis/BL and all helped... or since her diet is less they did not have anything to survive on..... I thought it was interesting that they all passed though. certainly dead in a glob.... weird... maybe I will post on that seperately..... Will keep you abreast of how they do.
