I have a hen that's maybe 1 1/2 - 2 years old. She's been acting weird for a couple of weeks and I just recently discovered a HUGE mass on her breast. I figured it was something to do with her crop... it felt squishy and full, and when I squeezed it to feel if it was solid, she threw up a watery liquid. I've never seen this on any of my hens, or roosters, so I researched and came up with sour crop. Nothing around here is open and I was wondering if there's any home remedies that will help??? Will diatomateous dirt help??? Please help! Thanks!

the crop sits on the front of the chest, if it is soft and squishy, the chicken might be digesting her food. if her breath smells very bad and sour, then she probably has sour crop. hold her upside down by her feet and massage her crop from bottom to top carefully and gently, and let the liquid drain all the way to empty it. as for treating it, i just use an antibiotic spray and put some in their beaks or on their food. my girl had sour crop just a few months ago. you can pick her up and smell by her beak. you will know; if she has it, you won't be able to stand the smell.

I will try letting it drain. I didn't know if trying to get it out would hurt her or make it worse? Thanks. And I'll get some antibiotics tomorrow.

I just 'drained' it from her and I didn't get it all out but the bulge is definitely gone. It smelled HORRIBLE and she let go of about 3/4 cup of it! I separated her and put some fresh water it there because I know it must taste disgusting! /: Thanks for the help!

Keep gently massaging her crop for the next few days to help her pass this. The massaging helps break down any food in her crop and helps pass it so it doesn't get stuck/sour again

Good luck!!
