Sour crop - vinegar & massage doen't seem to be working - help needed

i am so very sorry!!! sometimes we do all we can, and it doesn't work- hugs!

kickin- what is going on with yours and what treatments have you tried?

I am very sorry for your loss.

One thing that may help prevent sour crop if this is in fact what was wrong and I suspect not. Meaning you should feel no guilt for the loss of your girl. Make sure they have access to Insoluble grit at all times, restrict treats of greens, especially if they are free ranged.

Sometimes even with all we do we will lose a bird now and then.

artsyrobin, Hi there and thank you for asking .I have since put her back with the others - she had to me what seemed like a crop problem that I believe has resolved itself but there are no eggs from her and he poop is all white stuff and what looks like egg whites w/ a little yellow in it . There is no swelling and she is eating again although not with the same gusto as before . I'm just gonna have to wait and see with her I guess.

also i got this in reply to an email to threehorses, so if anyone needs it later-

I suggest withholding all food except lots of water with ACV (4 tbsp to a quart of water) to let the crop try and empty - the acv is antifungal, antibiotic and anti yeast agent and will help kill any organism causing the issues - no sugar, sugar (molasses) feeds the organisms. After 6 - 8 hours feed her some olive soak bread every couple hours and continue with lots of water with acv. Gently massage the crop without pushing upward (you could choke her). The oil makes things slippery and anything stuck can begin to move out. Make sure she is on bedding that cannot be ingested. They will eat anything trying to get relief for themselves. After 24 hours check her crop and gently without pushing up massage the crop to help things. Massive gross poops are good. If the crop is still sour and smelly and gassy you can give her 1/4 tsp mylanta plain flavored to help settle the acids.

Once the crop has empties don't be too quick to start feeding her again. Start off with the oil soaked bread, chicken pellets that have been wet and are mushy, a little yogurt and very finsly mashed boiled egg.

You have to give the crop a chance to heal and begin to function before you let her have a free diet. After 3 - 5 days slow begin to introduce her regular food and a little grit to help it along.

Let me know how it goes.

i would go ahead and keep her isolated a little longer so you can watch her poops and actions- do you give vitamins to her? it might be a help for her- keep us posted

OK the oily bread works too, but I also add red wine.

I get it all pretty soggy and even fed it to the others. It was back when hubby was alive and he kept picking on me about my wino chickens, but it worked.

I just tore up bread and drizzled with olive oil and a little wine and they ate it up. The crop cleared in about 2 days. Even when the 3 I've had with this problem wouldn't eat, they sure scarfed this stuff up, but only after I read about the wine and started using it. Go figure.

i wonder if there is a helpful bacteria in the wine that adjusts the inbalance in the crop? i'll have to do a search on that... interesting

I can't remember what it was I read about it. My husband was still alive then and he was an RN so looked it up and gave me a reason, but always thought I'd have him to ask about it again.

It really did work though and yes chickens are boozers! LOL
