Sour crop?

the crop was empty after fasting for 16 hours. But it was still large and squishy.

I'm a little confused with your description. If the crop is empty, it should not be large and squishy?

It's not an absolute to provide a source of grit if you are only feeding chick starter. Since you are having crop issues, then it may not be a bad idea to offer it free choice. Young birds "experiment" and she could have ingested bedding (shavings, straw, hay) and is having a hard to time processing these things without grit.

Here is one a very good article about crop issues by @TwoCrows http://www.backyardchickens.com/a/impacted-slow-and-sour-crops-prevention-and-treatments

Thank you for the response Wyorp, as I understand grit is not needed with just starter crumbles. And the crop was empty after fasting for 16 hours. But it was still large and squishy. I have acv in the water and am feeding hard boiled eggs. I started to administer Monistat 7 as seen on a previous BYC thread. Being optimistic.
While grit may not be needed when feeding only starter feed, providing chick grit may be beneficial and will not cause any harm.

Check these sites out regarding the use of ACV.

It is not recommended to add ACV to the water when the temperatures are over 90°F. My own trial with ACV in the water for chicks/poults while in the brooder showed a great increase in pasty butt which disappeared as soon as I stopped using ACV.

Is it even possible for an 8 day old poult to have sour crop? I massaged the squishy crop and some water and feed came out, but it didn't smell foul. I separated the poult yesterday for about 4 hours with no food. The crop went down. Now today swolen again. Separated without food and gave a small amount of red wine with dropper. Any ideas?

How is the poult doing?

The poult came around his crop is a tad saggy but getting better. I switched to sand for litter and that seemed to help a lot. But this morning I lost one for unexplainable reasons. The flock was fine at 10pm then at 5am one was gasping and expired while I watched helplessly, tried to give water but she perished in seconds...BBW maybe genetics?

That is odd. How old are they? I put sand in my pen but they were around 4 months old when I did it. I have Narragansetts and for the most part have had good luck. I had a poult about a year ago get what I thought was sour crop. I spoke with a vet that specializes in poultry and he informed me that what I thought was sour crop was actually pendulous crop. It was totally my fault. I had to many birds and not enough feeders. She evidently was getting rooted away from the feeder and when she got a chance gorged herself. Well, thats where it all went down hill. He informed me that some pendulous crops will return to normal but many dont. I tried to save her but eventually had to put her down. I hope yours continue to get better.
