Sour crop

My 2 or 3 year old hen has sour crop. I rang the vet and they said to get tablets in the pharmacy. I'm getting them tomorrow. I'm worried she won't survive till then, what can I do? I could give her electrolytes... apple cider vinegar? Is there anything I can do to make sure she survives to get the tablets?

What kind of tablets did the vet prescribe?

How long has she had Sour Crop? Often a crop problem is a symptom of an underlying condition. Does she have any reproductive issues? Can you take a sample of her poop to the vet to have a fecal float to make sure worms are not part of the problem?

She's had it since last Saturday. It's actually a liquid the vet prescribed. It's called micostatin. 1.5ml three times a day.  Her background wasn't great before i got her. She was in a battery farm, and then her whole flock was killed by a fox. Then i got her after that. Maybe it's stress from past years that causes issues with her? She is on the bottom of the pecking order aswell so that doesn't help. Can worms cause missing feathers that aren't growing back as she is very scruffy and missing a few.

Oh good, I'm glad the vet gave you an anti-fungal to treat the crop.

Do you have photos of her?

Missing feathers and looking scruffy could be due to her being at the bottom of the pecking order. Sometimes they get plucked or pecked at.

Is she dust bathing?
How long have you had her, do you have a rooster and have you looked for lice/mites?

I've had her around a year and a half. She doesn't have lice and I don't believe she had been dustbathing before this. I got diatomaceous earth and will put it in their dust baths. I really don't think poor Big Red will make it through the night. She is lying down in the nestbox and isn't moving only breathing. Thanks for your help.

I'm sorry that Big Red is not improving. Were you able to give her the medication the Vet prescribed?

A lot of times a crop problem is a symptom of an underlying condition. Reproductive disorders, infection, worms, coccidiosis are a few.

I've found that most of the time if I have a hen that is poorly with a crop problem, she has something reproductive going on. Cancer, EYP, etc. I've found cancer in some of mine when I performed necropsy, it's the pits.

Big Red has died this morning. I was able to give her the medication, but it wasn't working. When she was still alive when I picked her up, I could feel fluid underneath her. Maybe that was the cause... I'm happier that she died as she was. I'm so much pain. From now on, my flock will get yoghurt and apple cider vinegar in their water twice a week to improve gut health.
