Can anyone who is well versed please give me a step by step for my RIR. She has sour crop. Her poop is water with little bits of green pieces in it. She has been running, eating, drinking. But today she is lethargic and I saw a few times today with her tail straight out ( not all the way up as it's been). There is so much info on what you can do. I don't want to stress her out with trying different things. I just want to give her the most effective treatment to save her. She is 3 1/2 and doesnt lay.

Hi,

First, when you say she doesn't lay, has this been going on for a long time? She's pretty young to have stopped laying, and I wonder if there's something else going on as crop issues are usually the result of another deeper problem.

That said, I presume her crop is full and squishy and doesn't empty? It might smell bad as well.

If so, the usual treatment is probiotics and 1/2-inch of miconazole cream, such as Monostat or a generic equivalent. You'd just measure that out on your finger and put it in her beak. You'll need to do this twice a day for a week.

To keep her and any others from getting it again, I'd give them probiotic supplements either via the powdered kind for their water, or you can buy probiotic crumbles for their feed, and do that once or twice a week.

Here's a good article about the various crop issues.

When was her last egg?

Is her crop not emptying overnight - you've checked the crop, it's full, squishy and there's a sour or yeasty smell on the breath?

I agree, sour crop treatment is with an anti-fungal as previously described in the article linked.

Do keep in mind that often a crop problem is a symptom of an underlying condition like reproductive disorders, worms, coccidiosis and/or infection, so investigating why the crop is not functioning well can help when treat this symptom.

Thank you so much.
Yes she stopped laying 7 months ago. I will start that ASAP. Is it ok to try safeguard with her having sour crop? She just went through a molt and I think that messed her up.

Thank you so much. I appreciate your reply. Her last egg was around May 20th. Can I treat her with safeguard even though she has this sour crop?

Yes, some dewormers you're not supposed to give while they're molting, but while they're getting Monistat, there's no conflict.

Does she get oyster shell in a separate dish from the feed?

Thank you so so much. So give her the monistat and start the dewormer?

They do have access to oyster but I never see them eat it. I also have grit next to it as well. They do free range all day though. I do give them a calcium supplememt. But since Reddy hadn't been feeling well she wont eat the vitamins.
