sour crop?

Just wanted to post an update - the chicken (her name is Jack) is doing SO much better! I have given up on the ACV and isolation and have just been dosing her up with Monistat which was the only version of the anti-fungal stuff I could get (kind of weird to be feeding her stuff marked "for vaginal itching"!). Her crop is right down, she is bobbling about healthy as you like. Now I am just not sure how long I should go on with the medication for, but hopefully she is out of the woods and I can play it by ear from now on. Thanks so much for your advice!

Hey,
I've read all your posts about sour crop. I think my young white orp has it. She woke up with it full and is moving it around in a jerky way which makes it look like it's bugging her. I put her in a crate with some ACV water and yogurt and came in to research. I did try to vomit her after watching the great video (thanks for that) and did get some gross stuff out but not a ton. Her crop feels squishy but I did not hear anything. My daugther said it stinks though I did not get my face down there. I did feel some chunky stuff in her crop which felt like little mobile rocks. My girls free range and we just increased their run size to include a big wooded area (it's not new to them as we have been letting them loose and just decided to stop doing that with dogs etc). Also, we have had a ton of issues with feed waste and mold. I rake daily but the squirrels make a huge mess and it's a never ending battle. Anyway, I plan to try the lotramin. We just lost one last week so I'm not wanting to loose another. I did not notice the enlarged crop on that girl so I'm hoping it's unrelated. Any other tips would be appreciated. She does not like being in the crate. I feel for her.

Oh sour crop, my mortal enemy!

I have been dealing with sour crop since FEBRUARY. Luckily my little lady is still alive and doing much better. I would first try to natural route, as it is better for them, but if it does not go away you may need to bring in the bigger guns to try it. You can tell that it is a sour crop by the smell alone. She should have a foul smell coming out of her mouth and when you squeeze on her crop you should be able to hear gas and feel it moving out (it will sound like burping). Here is what I did after I checked all her symptoms back in February:

I first tried the acv and with holding food and what not and that just didnt work.

I looked up more on sour crop and found out that it is actually a fungal infection.

So I saw a post on here about treating with MONISTAT.

That worked for a while, but it eventually came back.

I then tried all the different kinds of monistat and lotramin, then called the vet to get the nystatin.

To make a long story short I have been giving her just the regular lotramin for the past month and her crop has gone mostly back to normal. I figured out that I have to keep giving it to her even though her crop has gone down and seems to be better. Since you cant see in there it is hard to tell whether or not it is completely gone.

Here is what I have been doing:

When her crop first filled back up I went ahead and vomited her ( I am a pro at this now and can do it almost one handed). Here is a video I made on how to properly hold her for beginners

(deff do this into a trash bag, dogs will roll in it)

so after you vomit them give them a bit then start with the meds. I went to walmart and got 3 of the big equate version of the lotramin. Its right next to the regular stuff. I think it is like $5.47. I then give her about 4 squirts in her mouth. This of course is still challenging but you just gotta keep at it. I then shake her crop around a bit to make sure it gets in there. This has worked really well for us and I came to the conclusion that if I dont do anything then she will die. She has started to grow again and her crop is much smaller. I have downgraded her dose to just two squirts now.

They do tend to over eat with a sour crop after a while as their crop is so big and they have the instinct to fill it. This can cause them to get an out stretched crop which will eventually starve them to death.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions!
I am also going thru this with an EE and have been following all your post on this. Now for the lotramin, is this a cream or spray since you say squirts. I will give this a try. I use Braggs, yogurt time to time, tried the monistat , do the vomiting

when she will let me. I hope this is the answer. I too cannot separate her for I have no place to put her. Her crop is huge and sways and it is in her way but she still eats always has and the feathers are missing on it. Some of the front is growing back but not underneath. She doesn't lay as much as the rest, but I blame it on this. I will start the lotramin and pray for a miracle.

Hey JakRat,

I think I'm going to start trying your med thing today. Q? How much is a "squirt"? Also, my hens crop will be massive and hard as a rock at by bedtime, but pretty big and squishy in the AM. Should I wait until the AM to vomit her and give her meds?

When you guys say Lotrimin, or Monistat, in which form (sorry for my ignorance) are they?
I feel pretty dumb asking this... But do you use the cream, liquid?!! And you administer it orally to the chicken with sour crop?
Thanks very much.
I just realized that this discussion and string are from 2012, but who knows, maybe someone will read it?!

The cream! For a while I was using a tiny needle-less syringe. Eventually I realized she would eat it off of a spoon if I tapped her beak into it.
