Sour crop

Hi Shell3....sorry to hear about Bombie and her relapse. You know, my Miss Molly had a relapse last week for some reason. I have no idea why she has them. She doesn't free range, treats are kept to the bare minimum and I watch her diet like a hawk. One morning I felt her crop and it had some liquid it in. Had to give her a vomiting. And like you, makes me nervous to think an episode is coming on. LOL But what ever she had going on, it cleared right up. Molly's crop is starting to sag a bit all the time. So I am thinking that maybe that was the issue the other morning, just didn't empty all the way due to the low hanging crop. I am debating on whether or not to start her wearing her crop bra at night. Might help support and empty the full crop she goes to roost with each night.

Is Bombie wearing hers all the time? Oh, and did you get her a new bra? Yes, feather eating will clog up a crop. I have seen my Molly eat them and I get worried about an episode coming on. LOL Lately she has been pretty good about not eating any feathers. I am also considering adding some gamebird food to her diet, since I keep quail and have lots of gamebird food on hand.

Well, I hope Bombie is doing well now and she has no crop issues at the present. :)

Twocrows: thank you, bombie is well at present and yes she is in the bra allthe day and night , I never take it off. I think the angle that she has that diverticulum means without the bra the food just fills up the extra pouch, stagnates and causes infection. The bra just holds everything on place and keeps the food going the correct way down. To be honest I would be frightened to remove it now! I dont even like taking it off to wash it! Lol
I havnt ordered a new one yet no, it is scruffy ill admit but it does the job and ive had lots to pay out lately! Ive aquired 3 new kittens and need to buy vaccines ect but as soon as I have some spare funds I plan on buying a couple of spares. I dont know why they have these little relapses but this is wjere our obsession and paranoia helps out!! Lol we catch it quick and hopefully get it under control. I like you am always tense about it becoming an episode! Idk what are we like lol

Well little did I know that info from two crows would indeed come in handy as Bombie started plucking my other hens! Naughty girl! I've now got her to stop by letting them free range as much as possible and adding a handful of mealworms to their diet daily, thank goodness!
Bombie had a slight relapse, due I think to the feather eating! Her crop ballooned again, all fluidy, and when it didn't empty for two days I started her on over the counter canesten (thrush treatment) for two days and then it emptied on the third morning, relief! Lol so now she's been back to normal for a couple of weeks and is doing great. I was dreading a relapse but am so glad it was dealt with so easily . I'll be keeping a stock of canesten permenantly in the chook first aid box from now on

OMG Shell you gave me a good belly laugh on this one. Bless those chemists. I'm not sure if they'd appreciate the explanation that it's not for you and that it's for a chicken.

Ah well you see ive made that mistake before! After trying to answer all the chemists questions about my 'condition' and him looking very concerned and confused as to why I was wanting so many I gave up and told the truth and they wouldn't sell them to me! Not licensed. .....
I ended up driving to a different chemist and lying my little socks off lol
Now I just suffer the embarrassment! And often I notice other customers have started listening too! Lol idk I must really love that bird! Haha
