Sour crop

Good morning/afternoon to you Shell.

So glad for Bombie's empty crop again this AM. Slow and steady wins the race. Your diligence despite Bombies predaliction to PICA of stony objects is no doubt paying off!

I'm thinking your fingers are getting pretty good and defining what's in that crop. Seeds, mash, rocks, rubik's cubes, what have you.

My little Orpington this summer plucked an earring out of my Mother's earlobe. Hoovered it right down. Did some googling on the internet because my dramatic side was envisioning punctured digestive tract, etc. Their little gizards will pulverize just about anything it said. ( i suppose without sour crop happening in the bird

) The article made mention of bolts and brass ammo casings, etc. Crazy birds. They said depending on which you valued more, the bird, or the family jewels--the choice was up to you. Pearls happen to go into egg shell development. LOL. OMG. Spendy little egg there. Happened to be that Grandma's earrings weren't of the family heirloom quality and she let Sunny live another day. She just loves my birds thank goodness.

At any rate, I'm guessing you are about ready to add things to Bombie's diet, to be sure. Did you ever check some of the fermented feed articles? To me this would be a good time for that. Get some weight on that lovely Bombie girl with her voracious appetite.

My Australorp was just a machine yesterday. Like it was her last meal.

rubiks cube!

wouldnt put it past her to try!
Gosh they really will eat anything huh! ammo casings

you think they would have some inbuilt sense for these things!
good on your mum for letting the earring go, thank god it wasnt an heirloom!! she must have been pretty shocked to have it plucked from her lobe thou

im not sure about the fermented food, just the fermented bit puts me off cos thats what was wrong with the crop that caused infection, the food being left in there and fermenting. i havnt actually looked at it so i will have a look. i might be wrong (theres a first time for everything

)
ive thickened the food quite a bit today and plan on scrambled eggs before bed so ill have to wait till morning to see how thats worked out.
will go down in a bit to check how much its gone down since last feed. would have been down to clean already normally but the coops not getting cleaned today, i slipped a disc in my back!! :( still ,had treatment this morning and should be back on form mostly by tomorrow.
not the first time, wont be the last im sure! darn back, it just cant keep up with me! lol

mine are all eating like they are starved but think its the mash, they just love it!lol

Yes I suppose, I guess I didn't really think about the fermenting and sour crop. When I ferment mine this past fall I used Apple Cider vinegar with a "good" bacteria in it. So I don't think it's yeasty fermentation...per se? Hmmm. I don't know for sure, now...LOL. Better just ignore this one. haha. I'll search it out more when I get a chance and see if it would be a benefit to her or one of those things that's a "no-no" with sour crop. Have you heard anything more from ipana? Are you following a regimen that she recommends?

i messaged her to update as she'd asked me too. she recomended the scrambled egg. she just said to take it slow. dont try to rush back to the pellet and also made mention of the birdy bra. im hoping that'll come tomorrow x

bad bad news! crop didnt empty last night. filled with fluid again.spoke to vet he thinks shes eaten something thats got stuck.he said continue antibiotics and hope it passes massage and empty as much out as i can. think he was supprised she'd done so well to start with. shes now loosing feathers from the crop area too :( just dont know how its gonna go this time. any suggestions are welcome as are opinions xx

I now see that shes eating her feathers as they fall out, i saw on here people say its lack of protein but ive been putting protein supplement in mash all week and crushing meal worms on top. could it be coincidence that shes got the balloon crop back and is moulting at the same time or more likely shes loosing feathers because shes ill? ive tried to empty crop but didnt manage to empty it completely as shes kinda gasping when i do it! ive got some out and left her to rest in a cage indoors with no food and no bedding just newspaper (she'll eat the woodchip!) thinking of not feeding until i can get the crop empty as otherwise it wont empty and just get bigger and bigger again. dont know if im doing this right. will try to empty completely soon and then feed mash as i know she will eat. could the feather eating have caused the blockage?

well ive emptied out what i can but still fluidy and enlarged i just dont feel comfortable trying to empty any more, she seems breathy, as in i can hear her breath in which i dont remember hearing before, am i being paranoid? can you always hear them breath if you stick your ear against thier beak?! anyway ive kept her with no food as anything i give her is gonna make the crop bigger. she has water, im gonna leave her a couple hours and pray the crop is smaller then. if it is ill give her a small meal and see if it empties overnight. if its no different do i feed her anyway or leave her the night without food? see if it empties?

Oh No....

Sorry to hear of this recurrence. That poor bird.

I wonder if she aspirated a bit of her crop contents...? If she sounds breathy afterward. I know that when my birds sleep I can hear them breath on their roosts...little lite breathy snoring.

I know we sort of go into the fermentation thing again...but do you think the wine is worth a shot? She is not going to like you because it's suppose to make their food and pooh push through pretty fast but if it clears away something it might be worth it....? Then just be ready with the anti-yeast medicine thereafter. I just don't know.

hi guys well i pm'd ipana again she said to allow the crop to empty completely before offering soft foods like scrambled eggs and such. ive emptied out what i could and left her in doors with water only and newspaper on the floor so she cant eat loads of woodchip. i think the crop has gone down some thou isnt empty yet. i keep massaging often. i dont want to feed her til its empty as i may be doing more harm than good. ill give antibiotic tonight and nystatin if i have any left. leave her with water over night and say a prayer for the morning that its empty. she'll be in my room tonight so ill keep a close eye on her. shes been pooping all day some normal and some very watery. i know she wants food its so hard not to give it to her! if its empty then ill give her the eggs first thing. i hope im doing this right! im tempted to try the wine but think ill wait til tomorrow first and see if it clears on its own.
my poor baby :( its so unfair. shes bright in herself thou and a real fighter, thats what i have to be for her. i owe her that. i think of the future and see her happy carefree with her sisters . thats what keeps me going. it must bepossible.we came so far. xxx thanks for your support xxx
