Hi there, I grew up doing all kinds of farming and now I've decided to try out chickens, well broilers to start off. how much feed does the average chicken need a day? how often should they be fed? can I just fill up the feeder or should I monitor how much they eating? is there a restriction on where in a town you can keep them, such as a residential area or central or must it be out of town? I'm from Howick in kzn

For "meaty" birds like Cornish x - that will eat their self to death if given half a chance, some have feed out for 12 hours a day, and 12 hours without. They also move the feeders farther away from the coop so the birds actually have to exercise in order to eat.

I would think health laws would apply if you will be selling meat to others but, not if the birds are for you own consumption.
