Ok totally random: I'm now up to 5 losses in 3 weeks with the hawks and I've had it. I have a huge 10 x 30 pen set up that bumps right up to my coop, I just need to cut a hole to make a pop door. My question is this: do you think chickens will use a doggie door to go in and out of? I know chickens are very "special" and not the brightest but I have a smaller cat door I never set up in the house and I want to try it.

Is it the hard plastic type that is so solid they have to push it up to go out? Or were you thinking of taking that part off? Or is is soft material?
The reason I ask is because I have had a few folks tell me their chickens got their heads caught in the harder panels. You are right, they are not that smart.
However, I have used canvas and they did quite well going in and out that and other people have used plastic strips without any problems. Now Silkies and Sizzles may give you more problems as they really do not often catch on to stuff very quickly. Hey, it is hard to have beauty and brains!

I just hate that you lost your new pair of LF Cochins! I so wanted to see them grow up and grace your backyard! Stupid hawks!!!

How can something so gorgeous be so mean to us?

Okay, so we may not call our live ones a carcass, more like the "next contestant" but we do call ones we have taken the breast meat and "wheels" (legs and thighs) off of a carcass as we dispose of that. Only in ducks have we really left it a carcass with all the meat to put in the freezer.
But yes, in general, we also call what is left that we do not eat a carcass. I do not think I have heard of anything live called that though.

Oooh didn't think abotu that. I can take it off and replace it was fabric- good idea.

I know the hawk got in to the wire crate and couldn't get out. So it decided to munch on both of them. Cleve said he bawled b/c they weren't dead yet when he ran outside.

They would just cry and cry and cry until you would go pick them up and were happy as a lark in your arms. Waaahhhh!!!

Yes, depending on how heavy it is to open. I have a few doghouses that I'm using for young chickens. They have the clear plastic split doors on them and the chickens go in and out with no problem. I did pin them open for a few days when I first put the birds in there and I had to place the birds inside for a few nights but they finally got it.​

How is your little hen doing? If she is laying she should be past the age Marek's shows up but that is kind of what it sounds like--are you giving her electrolytes and Vitamins? Has she been laying recently?

This morning she could stand up but was still a little unsteady. I'm wondering if maybe she had been injured. I don't know. I'm going to try and pick up some electrolytes and vitamins but I work today..so I'll have to wait until I get home. I did run a fecal on her today and she doesn't have parasites so that's good. Hopefully it was just a freak thing and she'll be back to normal when I get home.

Her laying has been hit or miss. She'd lay an egg and then not lay one for a week and a half. I just figured it was due to the cold and her being young. I am SO hoping it isn't Mareks...

She may have gotten too chilled but to be safe go ahead and check a stool sample. In the meantime, I always treat with Dandelion Root to help the body get back in balance and I add Niacin, too. I give these mixed in a bit of 100% juice (no citrus) and use a syringe. Do not use any dairy products while treating either.

Thanks Amy. Her fecal was fine. Where do I get the dandelion root and niacin? Is there somewhere I can get it without ordering online?
