I use real creamed spreadable butter...is it similar to that consistency? The regular store bought honey was too...hot??? for me...does that make sense? It gave me a hot feeling in my throat...kinda like an after taste of something would...that's the only way I can think to describe it... had some real honey a couple times when I was very young but can't say I remember a comparison...my experience has really been with store bought...I really want to try "real" honey again and look forward to hopefully getting some from you!!! Maybe I should get a little of both and try it again!

Mary's honey is delicious. I have a jar from her that a friend gave me for Christmas. It is MINE, I hide it and do not share it. My other jar of honey that I do share is really good too but it's not the same. I only buy fresh, local honey. If you ever have fresh honey you'll never be able to eat the grocery store stuff again. It's as big a difference as fresh eggs vs. store bought eggs. Also, if you're eating local honey you are getting the benefit of local pollen that helps with allergies. Honey is healthy stuff.

Joycats, I will have a few extra I am sure after the next hatch (if "no-one" messes with the 'bator as I travel for work again next week)...how many/what ratio of pullet to roo might you be interested in?

I will also have hatching eggs when these mature...LOL...

I'm not picky - I'll take a pair, two pair, a trio and/or hatching eggs.

I can't help ya here! DH & DD will NOT keep a dog that has killed another one of our animals.

I am the alpha dog around here.

Ummmmm.......if you're alpha, then wouldn't keeping or not keeping a dog be your call?

I don't have the heart to rehome her - we love her. Animals come here - they stay here. I just have to find the solution, it's out there, it just hasn't come to me yet. I'm still thinking.

Yeah...which is why none of our dogs eat our chickens....so we do not have that issue! One dog we thought did.......turned out he didn't the birds just hid from him til later that afternoon.

ETA: The border collie does like to herd them .... ducks herd better than chickens!

Yeah...which is why none of our dogs eat our chickens....so we do not have that issue! One dog we thought did.......turned out he didn't the birds just hid from him til later that afternoon.

ETA: The border collie does like to herd them .... ducks herd better than chickens!

So do you just get rid of any dog that doesn't behave around the birds or do you have a secret training tip? If so, please share.
Yes, I imagine ducks do herd better than chickens.

Speaking of ducks, I've been leaving my nursery yard gate open and it only took 2 nights for the mallards to decide to sleep in that yard. They're all going up voluntarily every night. It's so cute, I just leave the gate open for them. I think they feel safer being behind the fence. We're missing a few ducks, I'm sure the coyote has gotten some of them.

We are having bad "turkey" luck this week. My son's one turkey hen, Ms. March, her legs gave away. She can no longer stand on her own. I'm having to pick her up and put her in the shelter every night. She's a big girl. Not sure how this is going to end as Jonah won't hear of putting her down (or eating her). And now Tom Turkey has a bad cold. He isn't eating, his breathing is labored and his eyes are crusty. I'm putting meds in his water but I don't think he's drinking enough to help. Valentine, the other hen, seems to be doing great and is sleeping by herself. I guess she doesn't want to catch anything the others have.

As I said in the previous post...that Mozilla ate.... as long as we have had dogs & chickens - no dog has ever killed any of our chickens. That I remember. I would have to ask DH since he had chickens for years and years & I never bothered with them!

I will not repeat the story I was telling on the other post. It was not an animal killing dog...but what made me start getting silkies!




ETA: Exposure & Training is what I swear by.

ETA2: My pit had NEVER been around chickens until she was 3 - and she learned well. I would take her out with me to do chores and talk to her so she would learn what I was doing.
She is very intelligent, anyway, so it did not take long.

I don't.... you guys have me worried about getting one that may be difficult!
