South Carolina

I am so glad they have windows in the Genesis top because I am forever peeking in to see eggs or babies. It is a lot of fun no matter how many times you see it. What a miracle to watch these little creatures emerge from such a cramped place and come out to run wild around a brooder days later.
I had a Mille Fleur bantam Cochin and 2 BLRWs hatch yesterday and tomorrow I hope to have 3 Blk CMs hatch from shipped eggs.

It is just so darned exciting!

Uhmmmm, did anyone else hear we have another storm moving in next week?

Hi SC folks!
I'm in the upstate-over in Mauldin-and want to get my city ordinance changed so I can keep hens again. I've posted in that forum, but decided that I maybe should ask here if anyone keeps chickens near here and would be willing to help give some moral support for when we attend the council meeting(I'm still gathering research on what the other nearby city's laws are, etc)
We had a small flock a couple of years ago, before we were annexed into Mauldin, but they have a 1 acre minimum for livestock. Apparently a neighbor complained about my partner in crime down the way having a rooster, so zoning found me out, too. The zoning officer told me that it is very unlikely that the council will change the ordinance-he seemed sympathetic and agreed that my hens/area were neat and sanitary. Then I found out last summer that another neighbor down the street has two hens. The official told me that he walks the neighborhoods of Mauldin each summer to check the backyards and make sure that everyone is in compliance with the various codes. (!) Why did we not get annexed into Greenville!?!
Anyway, I sure would like to get the code changed-we miss our birds. They got me outside more

Any help/tips would be appreciated!

What? Amy stop it!!! I don't want another storm (although we do need the rain). All this talk of eggs makes me want a broody so bad but DH would wring my neck, along with any roos I got in the batch too!

Question for everyone: we have 8 wild turkeys hanging out by the fence line. They have to be coming into the backyard, but should I do anything to keep them away from the chickens and the feed?

Yay for 60 degree weather this weekend!!

Eric when you are on your pins and needles I'll listen to you worry over the eggs! Okay so back to the bator watch!

Yes, they are frizzleds...you will be able to tell during the first two weeks...My pre-Christmas babies showed their "frizzelness" very early, the other babies are only 5 days old, so I can't tell yet...
