I have some good news - my turkeys are getting better! I can't believe it. The Tom got really sick (with foam coming out of his eyes kind of sick) so I quarantined him and put the hen in with him since she couldn't stand and wouldn't stay under the shelter. After just a few days of treatment they are both looking much better. The hen is up on her feet again. She didn't exhibit any respiratory issues like the Tom so I really just thought she'd gotten too heavy for her legs but the meds have helped her alot. I'm hoping to be able to turn them back out this weekend. I'm just amazed. I'm so thankful as these are my son's pets and he was very upset about it.

On a different note, we now have another predator - owls. We've always heard them down in the woods (and I lost a kitten to one several years ago) but this week I'm seeing them in my yard. I've lost one chicken to them, I'm pretty sure as the chicken was only missing it's head. Of course it was one of my blue marans.

Last night, about dusk, as I was finishing my chores there were 2 big owls sitting in the tree watching over my breeding yards. I also had 3 coyotes in the yard. Geez Louise, didn't know I would need round the clock security for my chickens. On a good note, my mallards are voluntarily going up into a fenced yard every night so I can close them up and keep the coyotes away from them. Not sure about the owls.

Greetings from the Lowcountry of SC. New to Forum. New To Backyard Chickens, trying to catch up to many of my neighbors who have been enjoying this for years! Building my tractor this weekend, will post pictures in process and when complete! Anyone else from the Lowcountry / Charleston Area?
Hey Russ!!

I'm in North Charleston too! Welcome to BYC. :) I have 2 Araucana and 1 Barred Rock. But I am looking to get some Orpingtons soon. :)

Thanks Mary! I appreciate the info! I freaked out when I saw those little creepy crawlers on my babies!
I just treated everyone except the guineas day before yesterday. Saw mites on a chicken.

This has the dosage info. I use duvet ivermectin from Tractor Supply 250ml for $15.
I use a syringe without a needle. The instructions on the facebook page uses a syringe with needle. I would end up sticking myself

or the chicken since I have to do this by my self.
I also dusted the coop with sevin dust. I don't worry too much about eating the eggs since ivermectin is the wormer used for humans.

FYI 20 drops = 1cc/ml 1 mark on my syringe=1/10 cc/ml which is 2 drops

You have bators??? Don't you? You need to set some here? Hummmmm, sugar britches, I think I owe you for the strawberries you brought me last summer, the jar of yummy you brought me last fall and there seems to be something else you brought me.......oh yeah, some chickens... LOL...that feather legged gold laced pullet. LOL She is funny looking! I think the other bum legged girl is getting better. Lots and lots of Niacin. Remember that is what helps in the legs of ducks.

Good Morning.

The judging program is available for those who wish to go to the dog show next weekend. If you have problems or not sure how to follow, just let me know what breed and day, and I can look it up for you.

Thank you, Kris! I know you have put a ton of hard work into this! I would not be in your shoes for anything. You are a kind and courageous person!
ETA: there sure aren't many Bostons being shown! When we were in it there was about 35 at every show. Amazing! Hard to get majors that way.

And with all your hard work I figure it may be after the show before Toby and Bride come to your house. Unless Robert makes it up this way. But let us know if you want us to bring them to you. I will miss them but know they will come back at some point. You may fall too much in love with Toby to let me have him back though. He is one handsome dude. Bride is not as personable.
I could see you guys snipping off those leg and foot feathers from Toby so you could tolerate him staying at your place! LOL

Terrific about the turkeys! Do you medicate them differently than chickens? What meds did you use?

Owls! For petes sake! That is what I worry about here and won't let my babies sleep outside because of it. Those are silent killers and will easily walk into a coop after birds at night. My Muscovy want to stay out and party all night but I force them into the coops so I can lock them in. I don't think even the Pyrs can hear the Owls coming.
And those are protected, too. Get a permit.

Amy, the dog show entries over all have dropped over the years. We used to always have over 100 dobes entered and it took 36 girls for a major, today it only takes 13, can you believe it.

So yep times have changed, but the good news for the Foothills cluster, we are not really down in entries and there a very few shows that can say that. OUr July show is much bigger.

As for Toby and Bride, not sure what the next week is looking like, but we will keep you updated.

Uhmmmm, I thought it was supposed to hit 60 today?

I am freezing my hands off outside watering chickens and it is only 42 here.

Wonder if we will get that snow tonight?

I dread chores int eh morning or even this evening. I am going to move a bunch of my birds back into the brooder room and brooder coop. Some are acting like it is much too chilly. I so agree.
