Amy, I went outside this morning and one of the two cochins that I purchased from you is setting on her eggs. I was so excited.

I must have Amy's only backwards hen. She turned a year old on feb 14, started laying on feb 12th.

You have seen my brooders. You know I don't. I have the 2 brooders in the house and the....er, how many down in the barn....5 in the brooder room and 2 in the brooder coop.
Nah, I just keep an eye on the chicks and let them tell me if they are too hot or too cold and make sure they can move away from the heat or get close enough to stay warm.

Still worries me since I can't see them. I moved them earlier this afternoon. These are only 1-2 weeks old. A few mins ago they seemed so perky and were digging in shavings. My thermometer does not work!

Guess I will spend most of this evening checking on them to be sure it is not too hot with a heat lamp over them.

no i have 2 heat lamps in this weather. just in case 1 goes out. my brooder is 8ft.x 4ft. i feel safe with that. if they get under it i will lower the lamp if they get to far away i will raise the lamp. this seems to work for me

DD & I made a brooder about 4 feet long last spring. I can use it...it is a pain to clean, but usually put 4-6 week old chicks in it..

These are in a big 45-55 gal fish tank. it is a corner one so that is why I worry about them getting too hot. The lamp is up high...I think the edge of the shield is just even with the top.

ETA: it is a pain to clean because we had no plans. We just worked with what scraps we had - only power tool was a drill with a phillips head thingymajig on it.

i think I should get one with 2 or 4 wheels but I can already see my Boyfriend being all "But you ALREADY have a Wheelbarrow!!" And me sayin' " But it falls over and you aren't always there to wheel it for me!!" and the argument of where to store it and price amongst other topics would follow. . . I think I will just trek across the land a few bricks at a time and save the trouble. he thinks I hoarde enough as it is. But that stuff always comes in handy!!

Y'all are keeping me from my house cleaning. Stop it!!

I think she is too white tipped. I have 2 others that are much better patterned and actually better shaped from my breeding, too. They are in a breeding pen with Ranger right now but their eggs are too small to set in the bator. I will probably just hatch from him and my blue Mottled.

I hope you get NPIP certified so you can get your own done.

And before anyone can get their panties in a wad. DD would show her under the West Knoll Farm name. Not our names nor our farm names. Any placements would benefit Amy & West Knoll. Not us.

We will just do the minor stuff......bathing, transporting, entering.

My reason for saying this now....I have seen the reactions of some people over showing and who owns what and who bred what and such crap.

That's the politics of showing that I would not enjoy.
