South Carolina

I have a question about raising chicks...I have chicks in varying ages but the older and middle ones are wasting a LOT of chick crumble feed...I really need to get a grip on this...I have 10-12 week olds and 4-6 week olds all still on chick starter crumbles...they flick/scratch/waste so much! I have tried different feeder containers but even the 2-4 week olds inside in bins waste a lot of food...question is...at what age do you change them from chick starter crumbles?...and what do you graduate them to? and what do you find to be the best feeder for the older chicks but also to minimize the waste? or...any other suggestions? I even have drawers/pans to catch some waste and sift and re-feed (YUCK!!! I just don't think that is healthy but when 16 chicks go thru 30 lbs in one week ya gotta do something!!!)

Ditto...What is the FB site we can get together on? I sure don't want to lose track of you guys.gals!!!

I do the FB page but when the other place had a FB page I was turned off by some things...and they are having tons of trouble...I will still use it some but I LOVE BYC and the FB page for South Carolina!!

Just my 2 cents though!! I do LOVE all my peeps on here !! And my first Auction was after the change so I have nothing to compare to!! We all have our prefs though and that is what makes us who we are...and I like who we all are!!

Hey! When you find the answer, let me know! I cut down gallon milk jugs that are rinsed well. I put holes in 3 places on them according to the size of the chicks. I set 2 in the brooders. they can only eat a few at a time, which they hate since it is a group thing but they waste less feed until they start learning to turn them over.
I do have some kiddie pools, the very little ones with some pans of food in them. As they scratch it out I can get some of it caught and pour it back in the pan for the next day. Where, they naturally repeat the process!

I feed starter all the way up to laying age and then in the winter feed that mixed with layer. They get protein from bugs in the summer but in the winter, especially when some molt, they need more protein. I also feed as much in the way of whole grains as possible. Probably why I have some hens that are 5-8 years old still laying eggs. However, some like Betsy Wetsy, an old EE hen has only given me 5 in the last year and she is 5 yrs old. But she is a good old girl so she stays.

HaHa...you already have me in love with ole' Betsy Wetsy!!! I am glad to hear I am not the only one to recycle feed!!! LOL! These chicks just flick and scratch and really run thru feed without swallowing!!!???!!! If we could just come up with a feed bowl/dish we could make millions!!! HAHAHA

Glad to know I am not the only lonely one suffering thru the chick feed waste problem... Anyone else have any ideas? or suggestions?

ROTFL
I forgot you did that! I know I was laughing about something here and I think I was just leaning back after seeing you pull that stunt. At first I thought you had put it on Jackie's head! LOL Then I remembered how tall she is and though you had on some heels, that would be something and she was jumping around nearly enough.
And hon, I am way more chunky than you are! So that description could apply very well to me.

Since you are holding a chicken too.........you may have been the one to put it on your head! Not me

OK I have never had chicks go thru that much. What kind of chicks do you have? Some new elephant-gene birds?

Try hanging the feeder. so the bottom is just below their "chin" :)

I had to rig a feeder up lol.........hard to figure it out when using bins :)
