Hope ya'll don't get tired of the coop questions, but I have another question....

Now, my wonderful husband has decided that he wants to put some type of roost/coop thing (I have no idea what he has planned) in the corner of the run since the structure is like a huge coop anyways essentially. Here are a few pics of our unfinished chicken home.

Obviously, it isn't finished yet. I nailed down gauged wire on the roof (even though DH didn't want me to-added protection I say) and we are going to cover it with clear roofing sheets. I am going to bury gauged wire 6" under the fence line and then cover that with additional hardwire cloth at the gaps in the bottom, along the front @ 2' high and the gaps at the rafters. We also have to install the fencing to the front of the coop/run as well.

The structure is 8 feet square and @ 6 feet tall. Hubby is now wanting to install a roost or open coop in the far corner diagonally from the door (looking straight in the last photo). We would install a nest box somewhere in a seperate corner as well. I guess my question is....if you had this space, what would you do with it from here?

I REALLY would like to be able to put the chicks in it (at least during the day) soon. They are getting too big for the brooder. :)

That is very similar to my big coops...open on one side...I have 15x15 inch nest boxes(some say 12x12) on one wall and a roost pole across the back about 5 foot up....I hand my water near the door far away from the roost(poop issues) and put my feeder a couple feet away because of water splashing .Some put a poop board under the roost but I use sand and I can just rake the nights big poo row up every couple days! In the winter I cover air flow with plastic...but you need some air flow...You coop is looking good! Welcome to the addiction! You can never have too many questions for us and I know some others will give you their ideas too...you have to find what works best for your chickens and you

* do not put nest boxes higher than roost and make sure top is slanted where they cannot roost on top...and do not put under roost...again..poop!!

My catahoula is good too..and he seems to stay right with me all day...but he is a pup and he is scared to be outside alone in the dark! LOL Also if I come in during the day after a lil while he will be at the door barking becasue he can't find me! But he is awsome with the birds and goats...and the horse but she is not good with him...she tries to stomp him. He still will almost chase a chicken if one runs by fast...he will take a couple lopes after then he seems to catch himself and stops...he has yet to hurt a bird and only had one in his mouth but it was a loose chick and he caught it and gave it too me soggy but unharmed! I wanted a pyr but I do not have all the land fenced and with only 8.5 acres I felt one would be tempted to wander..

I emailed about the Pyrs, too. Told them I was totally fenced in, have vaccination records on my other dogs and was a poultry farm since they said in the ad they had been around chickens. Haven't heard from them either so I figure they placed them.

Debra brought her new Golden Retriever puppy out the other day when she came to pick up ducklings and Jolie absolutely loved him! He was fantastic around the chickens, ignored them for the most part and loved playing with Roxy. She got him to live in her goat pasture. Debra has a Great Pyr/Golden Ret. cross that she says is great with the farm animals. I got to thinking....hummmmm.....

Dixie, once you have the holes patched have at it! Let those chicks out to play! They need a roost bar and it would help them to keep warmer if there is some sort of smaller open side box for them to stay in at night. I like to access my nest boxes from outside. Less poopy feet for me.

Its Elloez's coop...LOL...but I agree...she is soo close to letting those babies out!!

Wiring over the top is a great idea, it will protect them from hawks, owls, raccoons and oppossums. Besides some roosts and nest boxes, the only other thing I would do is some sort of roof over part of it to give them shelter from the rain. Keep in mind that babies don't usually roost and they start out roosting low. My grower pens have nest boxes on ground level for the chicks/juveniles to sleep in so they can get off the cold, wet ground. A partial roof will be helpful in keeping your feeder dry too.

I have a friend that uses 2 black labs to guard his poultry. They're great with the birds. I would've thought they'd have the instinct to "retrieve" but they've never bothered them. He told me they were trained when he bought them so he's no help.

These babies had so much fun running around outside their coop for hours. Traveling in a tight flock and I figured the big hens would chase them down to peck at them, but actually everybody got alone pretty good. Still looking fo homes for most of them lol!!!

Remember lil runty

This is her today and I'm thinking about calling her Lacey because of the patterning on her front.

This is the Rooster I'm (thinking) about replacing my BlueJG....Anybody need a Beautiful BlueJG he's great with the ladies.

I've not been very sucessful on my dog hunt .....I've replied to adds on CL's and had no responce. Often I wonder if adds with no number or pics are truly legit.....

And, I have found the Greenville great pyr rescue to not be to user friendly. I'm all for helping a dog in need, BUT I want to pick out our new dog. Not someone tell me what dog they think will b a match for our family. Applications, interviews, ignored emails are a big turn off.
