I have been majorly MIA the past month or so! I hope everyone's doing great! I'd love to read all the posts I've missed but it is a whopping 342 so I don't think that'll be happening! I've been a little preoccupied because my husband and I got some big news a few weeks ago. I'm pregnant! I still can't believe it, but we had our first ultrasound yesterday and got to see the little baby's heartbeat. It was amazing! (Like the ultimate candling of an egg!!!) Hopefully I'll do better keeping up on here but just wanted to share my news!

Oh my gosh!!!!! Congrats!! That is fantastic news! Is this your first??? I have 4 and my youngest is 7 months old. I LOVE our announcement too!

Hi SC chicken folks!

I have a VERY broody hen who was sitting on 3 fertile eggs I got from a friend. She sat 10 days and then the eggs disappeared. I suspect a snake. Does any one near Spartanburg have any very young chicks I could purchase? Or just a few eggs that are close to hatch? I am not picky about gender or breed. Just want to get this poor broody out of the coop, it is so hot in there! Thank you!!! Oh, today is 7/15/12 adn she has already been sitting for over a month. Thanks again!

Welcome to the our BYC family!! I have been on this board since April or May of last year. I can truly say that 90% of what I have learned about chickens came from here and most of it from this thread. You have just found a wonderful group of kind, helpful, people, that are great cheerleaders, too, when you need them to be. Do not expect them to help cure you of chicken math-they are huge enablers!

Congratulations!!! I love your comparison of ultrasound to candling-only a chicken mamma would think that! Hope you are feeling pretty good and the rest of summer isn't too bad for you. At least you will have the nice cool weather when you are nine months along!

We are working on integrating 3 Orps that are 12-14 weeks old into the big girl flock. Yesterday was the first full day and all three survived without any bloodshed. They spent a lot of time in the coop, but would occasionally go into the run when the coast was clear. The good thing with them in the coop by themselves, was they were able to eat and drink without being bothered. We did notice they could get to treats without them being taken away. I have a picture I will have to post later. At one point yesterday morning, we looked in and all three had crammed themselves into one nest box! Last night when the others were roosting, they had done the same thing, but this morning. Lou Ann said they were actually on the smaller roost. We have left their small run together for now in case we need it for chicken jail. We have a couple of hens, one being our Ameraucana, who have gotten a little mean. They might just get jailed for a day or two!
Mamma hen, Maranda, is still wanting to be with her babies, but will leave them free ranging and come into their separate run for a short while. We put her in with the hens again yesterday. She promptly went after two of them (as if to remind them she was always head hen!) and then back to the gate between the runs and paced quickly for me to let her back out with her babies. I hope by the end of this week to have her back with the adults.
This integration thing can keep you on edge, but is also really interesting to watch. Just do not try to explain it to non-chicken people-they will think you are crazy!!!

I probably have some eggs in the bator that woudl be good. I will have to check to see what I have. I was about to set another 30 today anyhow so I will go ahead and see what I have growing in there. I am on the Lyman side of Spartanburg but my addy is Inman.

Put Sulfur around the coop to keep the snakes out. They won't cross a line of sulfur. It looks like a dust storm when I put more down but I don't find snakes in my barn anymore.
