Good morning Meghan. I'm in Abbeville in the upstate. What kind of hens do you have? Do you have pics?

Good morning! I love the upstate, although not sure where Abbeville is exactly. I have had RIR's, Barred Rocks, Red Stars, and EE's. I now only have Easter Eggers (I adore them the most and who doesn't love colored eggs) and now venturing into ducks with a female Buff and Cayuga arriving first week of April. How about you?

Abbeville is on the Georgia border and just below Anderson County. Some of my favorite chickens were EE's. I've got seven AM chicks from scflock who visits this site, too. I have five Silkie chicks, three young Silkies, and three nine year old hens (BO, SLW, and a WPR) I love the Charleston area especially when the azaleas start blooming.

Wow nine years old, sadly none of mine have made it that long although I'm hoping my EE's do. I'm adding 5 more next month. I recently stopped by a farm down the road to let them know their baby goat was by the road and noticed they had a bunch of silkies and some bantam roosters and oh my were they all so adorable! Yes, I absolutely love this area in spring, it's stunning. Have you ever made it to Summerville for the big Flowertown Festival held usually around the last weekend in March or first weekend in April? I'm not sure what's going to happen this year as the azaleas are already starting to bloom. We have had years during festival time when the dogwoods and azaleas and wisteria and other flowers are all in bloom and other years a late frost comes and kills all the blooms or even spring came either early or late and not a bloom to be seen so not much of a Flowertown Festival when that happens. Well it was nice meeting you.

85% in an LG? Are you a wizard? Weren't you the one either breeding, or looking for LOs last year? How is that going? I grew out my order of Paul Smith AMs and just started hatching from them. I'm extremely pleased with the quality of that flock

We grew out and sold off what we hatched in LO. Kept our best looking hen and getting a too this week to go with her. We had decided to stick to Easter eggers since there seems to be a new novelty interest in that direction. We have only been mostly hatching our own eggs, I credit that to or higher hatch rate. I only have one gal I purchase babies from when I need to supplement for a swap. (and have something to sell, most of our chicks are sold before they hatch. I do have one 2 week old right now, no one wanted we've kind of gotten attached so, we true to find a couple chicks for company, but had no luck so far. So we'll have new babies in 2weeks, we've had good luck with mixed ages in the past so we're going to keep a pair of buddies so we can see what grows out (need to keep a couple girls to check out what they're laying)

I'm loving my AMs, but my EE's are my best layers with the highest hatch rate right now. They were almost 100% fertile straight through the winter, and that rooster is covering 13 girls. If AM sales slow down, I may start setting EEs again. AMs usually sell out straight run, so I can sell them quickly, but a lot of people looking for EEs want pullets. Because of the pea combs, it takes me a few months to be able to sex them, so that's why I'm focusing on the AMs right now.
