South Carolina

Hello fellow South Carolinians, I'm a northern transplant originally from PA, moved down about 5 or 6 years ago, currently living on an acre in the country in Bishopville just starting out with our first flock. In the process of building a hoop coop as the weather allows. This rain has been crazy lately. We have "neighbors" around the corner who also have chickens and a Pilgrims pride poultry farm nearby. When one rooster starts crowing they all do. I can hear the faint replies of others in the distance back and forth with our boys. They've got phenomenal hearing apparently.

Will be soon adding a pair of goats to the homestead to live in harmony with the chickens and help keep the hawk away from them when they're out to run during the day.

SOOOO to all you South Carolina egg people that might want to sell your eggs at a Farmers Market, you need to apply for an Egg License.
https://agriculture.sc.gov/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Egg-License-Application-Packet.pdf Then I have to candle, bleach wash, refrigerate them, size the eggs, and then LABEL the box by putting my name, address info, date, size of eggs, advise them to put them in the fridge.

If you want to sell out of your house/farm/land you can post a sign saying Eggs for Sale, and "at least" wash the eggs in bleach and refrigerate them to 45 degrees. This goes counter to everything I've learned here, as that would remove the protective barrier called the "bloom" and by doing that causes the egg to have to be refrigerated. If I leave the bloom on, there's no need to put them in the fridge.
Thanks for the information. Seems odd washing eggs in bleach would be a requirement since eggs absorb liquids. I've dyed an egg or two in my nearly 40 years. They often end up colored inside.

Also a PA transplant here to SC.

I agree it’s odd about the washing. I just bleach washed two eggs in my recent hatch and they both made it.

Sounds about right. I ended up taking a job up in PA back in 2018 that had me away from home during the warmer months, paid well, but it got to be too much being away from home and the family for months at a time.

Initially my Stepbrother moved down here I wanna say 15ish years ago, my parents followed about 10 years ago, my sister and her fiancee a year or two after that and then us about 6 years ago. The wife has an Aunt in Monck's Corner, who's been in the area for quite some time.
Exact opposite. South Park. Came here in late 90’s and I’ve moved back and forth 5x, LOL. School, work, family, etc. bought a house this time so not going anywhere any time soon

Similar story. Had friends of the family move down. We helped move them since their kids are special needs. After vacationing the next year dad put resumes out and picked up a job and we moved after that around 3-4 years after it all got started. LOL. South Park is SW PA a suburb south of Pittsburgh.

Yeah I thought it was Philly or Pitt area, wasn't sure which.
