We just had our very first Silkie hatch from my own flock. Why is that so exciting? But it is! I swear that thing pipped and hatched out about three minutes later. I'm beginning to see why hatching your own eggs is so much easier. After about 10 minutes, it was up and around and pecking the thermometer. I predict a very cool chicken!

My children are beyond thrilled! No idea what color it is since I haven't yet separated out everyone, but we don't care! It will have a home with us forever!

That is exciting! I remember hatching my first ones and thinking it was so much easier than the way I had a kid.

Can't wait to see the photos and know what you are going to name it.

I am about to get off the Net for the night. A big band of heavy rain, wind and possibly bad storms headed our way. Baton down the hatches (

) and hang on. I think we are in for a bumpy ride.

We are back! Wish we were still at the beach . . .
Can't believe how much all the chicks grew in four days! All except for the silkies are outside. The silkies are on the back porch until I get all the others out of their space. Am I crazy to still have a heat light on in the coop for 4 week old chicks? It's supposed to be cold tomorrow night, but most of them slept outside in the run Thursday night.

My kids came out much faster than the chicks we hatched, (from pip to hatch) but I would much rather hatch more chicks than be pregnant again

Woooooooo Hooooooooo Amy...got my first egg from the little red frizzle I got from you...guess it is time to start collecting them!

Also have 3 guineas now...not sure about them..my pastor calls them the "gangsta's" of the poultry world...LOL

I gave it a really good cleaning this afternoon. Set 36 more eggs. (30 white leghorn, 6 buff orpington). Nutrition is a non issue for sure. they get good feed and healthy treats as a small supplement.

The humidity stayed around 60-70 days 1-18, then 75-85 days 18-21. Temp was a constant 99.1-100.2 Yes, i use the therm that the 2362N (auto turner + fan) and i use a digital that reads temp and humidity. The bator is on the west side of the house. the blinds in the room stay closed to prevent the room from getting too hot; HOWEVER, the whole house stays relatively the same temp no matter the room so that should be a non issue as well.

Like I said, first 2 hatches were great, i did clean after those. obviously didnt scrub as good as i should have, so we'll see if this time is the difference.

Sounds like you had fun! I think it's fine. I have my babies (6 wks on down) in a coop with a heat lamp. But the windows are all open too! If they want to sit under the light, they can. If they don't, they don't. The coop is 6 x 8 so they have plenty of room to run.

Not raining yet but it looks like it will soon!

I would just chalk it up to a bad hatch and move on. I've had a few of those lately and on eggs I spent a fortune on. I tried not to throw up thinking about it. But now I'm on to bigger and better things! Your next one will be better!

Was it your partridge eggs?
Ugh why when u candle do the eggs look so different? Meaning they look as though they are in different stages of development? I'm thinking my most recent eggs are a no go. Not seeing anything. Also, the bubble at the top of the egg....should it move around? Some do and some do not
