One quick question....How do you tell a Roo from a Hen when they are 3 weeks old? We have 5 chickies ( 2 EEs and 3 SLWD ) the 2 EEs are massive! We were told they were all hens and about a few days to a week old when we got them. That was 2 weeks ago. The SLWD are tiny compared to the EEs. Also, not even sure if one of the EEs isn't a Welsummer given the coloring.

Anyone know a great link or thread I can read to see exactly what they are for sure ( breed wise ) and how to tell a roo from a pullet?

Did you get them from a feed store? Probably have some roos.
EE roos get huge compared to others. I always know when I have roos growing up. Those legs and feet are massive compared to any other chicks.
I would say look at the comb but that doesn't work on EEs at 3 weeks or sometimes even 6 weeks.
Some EEs will look like Welsummers, too. The markings as a youngster will mimic them but they grow up all different colors.

I'm just on the the south side of Edgefield, so i think the wife would enjoy a ride up that way one weekend. Would have to be first of June though. We're getting married May 21 so we have alot going on between now and then.

Jack/Phoneman,

10 months is a little old for my month-olds. I would rather have the week-olds or whatever you have that are closer in age to my 1mo. old girls.

I would like a picture of him though, if you have one. Also, are we trading, bartering, purchasing, etc? Just need to know what I need to bring for you...and prob some of the others cuz I'm sure Kristen will see something she wants, lol.

Vit E will help tremendously. I have no faith in PolyViSol. It is a watered down version of vitamins to me. I use Dawes A-D-E or just plain Vit E from a capsule for wry neck.
We all have our favorite treatments. I am just sharing mine.

I had almost 2 dz Ameraucana eggs in my bator and had only 8 to hatch yesterday. One hatched without an eye and the other eye is deformed. The breeder says she has not seen that in her birds. Funny, I have never seen it in mine either, nor ever hatched one this way but no problem. I understand shipped eggs can be a risk.
So I have 7 blue and black chicks to work with from this breeder.

Today I have lavender and black(lav split) Ameraucana chicks hatching from another breeder. I have no idea where I am going to put all these precious babies since my brooder room is stacked high with brooders.
And I have run out of those little tiny bands. Now I have to try and use those tiny zip ties. My fingers were not made for tiny stuff, only power tools and a truck steering wheel!

Tomorrow I have 18 d'Uccle eggs due to hatch. Ummmmm....does anyone see that I have a problem?

Yes from the feed store. There legs are twice the size of the 3 other chicks so that's my biggest "roo factor" that I see so far. They don't have combs yet so that won't work. Thanks for your input!

My experience with EE is that the females are brownish and look like chipmunks when chicks. The boys have much different coloring (white, black, more vibrant). You should start to see the coloring come out soon. I have 45 EE hens and they are all light brown, brown or light grey. The roos I had were beautiful! But boys.

Exciting hatching for you! Amy, I have a question. I had planned to use these chicks in our breeding program. I'm thinking this might be a genetic thing with her line. She said another buyer had had the same problem. Would you put these in your breeding program? I'd hate to send off eggs to someone and have them go through this. Of course, it might not be an issue. They are not getting better at all. I'm not even sure they can drink being a day old and having their necks all twisted. Most of what I've tried to put by their mouth doesn't go in.
