Virus. Not strep, by any rate. We did that test. If I'm not better by Friday, I am to call for antibiotics.

I was hoping for antivirals, but the PA didn't think I needed them. I'm off to bed.

I know when I took off down the driveway there were 100 pairs of eyes looking and asking "Where's the food, Mom?" I fed them prior to my own lunch. Hungry birds, lol.

On a side note, I have "given" Aratoo two Leghorns for his harem. The Leghorns had escaped, seperately, from the main run. Birdbrains are now "grounded" in a chicken tractor with Aratoo. Aratoo says it wouldbe domestic bliss if he had a couple more hens in his harem, but we will see about that later. Aracuana plus Leghorn should make an interesting combo.

Well, it's been a morning of "catching" things (or at least trying to). Woke up with a stuffy head so I guess I'm catching a cold. I was unsuccessful at catching my escaped pheasant hen.....again. Will keep trying but she only shows up about once a day. Had to catch a bunch of escaped silkie and bantam cochin chicks. Apparently the ducks had managed to open the latch and let them and Mama hen all out in the rain. I found one little guy that I thought was dead so I waited til last to go back and pick him up. Well, he wasn't dead but just cold. So I cupped him in my hand (these are just a few days old) to get him warm and then I "caught" something else. I was warm and he had mites so they started crawling up my arm. Oh my gosh, I'm so sick of these mites and things. I've never had a problem with them before this year. This time I dusted myself in sevin before dusting him. Put the 2 cold, wet chicks (yes, we had rain this morning of all times) in a box covered in sevin dust and a heat lamp and then I went to take a shower. I'm still itching but the 2 chicks seem to be doing just fine. Now if I could only catch my pheasant hen and figure out how she keeps escaping. Now I'm off to go collect a weeks worth of chicken food. Hope you're all having a good day and getting a bit of rain at your house too.

Sorry your sick - hope you feel better soon. Don't you just love it when they say if you're still sick in a few days come back and we'll think about giving you some meds. And here's your bill, thanks for the income!

My boys have had this thing for 2 weeks now. I thought Jonah was going to skirt by with just 2 days of fever and feeling bad but now he's developed a cough. We never get sick, this is going to be a long winter. I hate winter.

I hate hearing how many people are not feeling well. I hope everyone gets better soon so they can enjoy these wonderful temperatures! All is pretty much quiet around here, except it looks like one of my silver laced wyandottes mixes may be a rooster. No crowing yet, but those hackle feathers are getting really long....

The quail are doing fine, but boy are they mean to each other! We added some branches and a box so they victims have a place to hide from the bullies. While grabbing the feeding dish I managed to stick my hand in some quail poo. Can you say say double

. I couldn't run inside and wash my hands fast enough. For some reason that never happens with the chickens.

Speaking of chickens, I am about to do some rearranging so I am getting rid of all my bantams. I have 5 of the most gorgeous gold laced bantam cochins and 2 or 3 pairs of mille fleur d'uccles if anyone is interested. I also have a pair of standard cochin that are pet quality that need a home, the pullet is black and you can choose from the black or buff X gold lace cockerel. I know I"m a good distance from most of you, so if nothing else, into freezer camp they can all go.

My meal worms arrived and within days I had pupa everywhere and now, I have beetles like crazy. Definitely going to move everyone into a larger bin this weekend and maybe split it into two bins.

I will be glad when my algebra class is over in 7 more weeks so I can concentrate on something fun instead- Like cleaning up the back yard flower beds, cutting back all the perennials, cleaning out the coops and spreading compost for next years garden.

They should both be laying. That's weird. Are the Columbian Rocks laying? Are those with your mom?

It's not that the Davis line doesn't lay very well, it is just they only lay the color of the Cuckoo Marans. A milk chocolate instead of a ground coffee color. Though I think my Davis girl was not as good of a layer as my others have been. She also was a much smaller hen and I wanted bigger birds so my meat would stretch further.
Here is a photo of eggs that may interest you. The darkest brown is a Black Copper Marans pullet. This is her 3rd egg of her life, she is 6 months old. Next to that is an Ameraucana egg, she lays a green egg. Below that is a Cuckoo Marans egg and next to that one, below the dark brown egg, is a Cayuga duck egg.

You can certainly run your blue C and black C together. You will hatch chicks that are blue copper, black c or splash. I seldom have gotten any splash. Recently I added a splash roo to my black copper pen so I am now hatching 100% blues. The splash roo is from a different bloodline but he hatched from a large dark brown egg, the stock looked very nice and he is a big boy himself. I am excited to see what his daughters lay next spring.
Feather legs are also dominant so if you have some without feathered legs they can still produce it crossed with a feather legged. I could care less as long as the eggs are big and dark and the meat is abundant on the frame.

I do love a pretty bowl of eggs with all the different colors in it sitting on the table. I don;t get to do that anymore because I sell them for eating or hatching but I used to love to see them there and change them out every few days.

I hardly ever get splash either. Although I don't have any splash hens in there. Just two splash roos. But I do have blue. I would like more splash!

We did not get rain. I'm still hoping for later this week!

I'm not sick but I did have to have a tooth pulled this morning in preparation for an implant. After 4 failed root canals and then a failed crown, my stupid tooth broke anyway. I think I've spent $4000 on this tooth already and now it's gone. Oh, well! I had IV Sedation at 8 am and still feel out of it! Plus the pain meds are making me feel crazy. Just glad it's done.

Feel better everyone!
