I'm sorry you lost Toffee! He looked so perky on the video. I know you did all you could for him and he looked like he was pretty happy. Sometimes bad things happen to good chickens.

And so sorry you had to deal with others that were going through the tough stuff, too. That is the hard part of owning animals.

I am glad the rest of your birds are doing well. I keep spraying down my coop and tractors with the Green Stuff Jackie gave me to try. She needs to sell this stuff. I had one Wyandotte with bumble foot but it healed up super quick before I ever got to deal with it. I have another one that seems to get it every year and this time I sprayed the Green stuff on it after working on it. I spray all the roosts and nest boxes in between cleanings. Not sure how it does for coccidiosis as that stuff can get airborne when sprayed. I hope this stuff and the Oxine will keep it killed back.

Again, sorry for your losses. I hope your weekend improves a great deal!

So sorry for your losses. I have no idea what you should do, I've never had this problem. I think I would start using Oxine in the drinking water and clean the coop and feeders with it. Then maybe mist the coop with it every few days for the next month or so. That's all I know to try.

I believe I have exceeded that goal (not hard to do).

We're actually just now home from the hospital. His surgery was scheduled for Monday and then we got a call just before leaving that the surgeon needed to reschedule. Turns out, the surgeon had an emergency appendectomy. Roddy's surgery was this morning and so far he's doing good. I have a feeling that the anesthesia hasn't worn off yet though. Thanks for asking. I'm glad to be home and glad it's over. Starting at 4:00 a.m. makes for a very long day. And now I get to go take care of all the chickens.

Wow, so glad your day is coming to a close. I am sure it has been long and I am so happy that Roddy and everyone is doing okay. I am sure you will still have your hands full with taking care of him and the kids but hopefully it will be short and everything can get back to normal.

Thanks Amy

but things have never been "normal" here. I'll be happy to have my regular old crazy routine back.

What's the "Green Stuff" and where can we find it? I lost a rooster to bumble foot this summer. Nothing I did seemed to help. I've never had bumblefoot here before. I think he cut his foot on something.

I'll be listening! On the subject of late hatchers, I hope this is wrong but my experience is the ones that hatch late end up dying. Almost every time. I'm talking ones that hatch day 25 or so. It's almost like they're too weak to hatch and when they finally do, they're too weak to live. I'd love to know what everyone else experiences!

This stinks. I wish I knew what was happening to you. I haven't ever had anything like this. Except for the hawk, we've been blessed. Where did your birds come from that died? I wonder if it's a nutrition issue from the parents somehow. I'm really sorry!

Generally, the same here. I've found if they haven't hatched by the end of Day 22, I might as well unplug and clean the hatcher. There are exceptions, I'm sure.
edited to add: I was told bleach isn't effective against the uglies that cause cocci, but ammonia is.
Good luck,

Just reading through the thread and trying to catch up before I have to go get my little one ready for bed. Dipsy not sure what others experience is but I have had great result with bleach as far as cleaning feeder, roosts and water goes. I will even spray it in empty coops when I pressure wash and seems to do good. I have not tried ammonia though and that might work and probably does work as well. One of the best things I have found with cocci is keeping the runs and around where food offered dry. If it gets wet some bird shows it within about 3 days. I have also started putting clean sand around waterers and food areas--which seem to help.

I had the same with some speckled sussex I got from phoneman. They never blinked an eye when so many of the other birds were sick here. Good breeding and good feeding.
