For me - it's my inlaws AND my own family! I swear that I was switched at birth. My own Mother thinks I'm crazy and just cannot understand the whole animal thing (especially pets in the house). Nevermind her opinion of having hundreds of chickens. And now we're talking about adding a horse....I worry she'll send the men in white coats to get me. When I told her I was going to homeschool my son she immediately explained to me why I couldn't because with all my animals in the house DSS would surely take my children away from me. You know DSS visits everyone who homeschools and apparently there is a law against having animals in the house.

You get that horse...and goat (girls please...less smelly) and calf and anything else that fancies you! And please educate those cherubs! at least in what God put here to sustain us! I love animals! all kinds! OK not granddaddy long legs or roaches

I applaud anyone who home schools anyhow. I get rattled just helping DD do some home work or projects. We were up til after 11 pm last night printing out a rough draft due today. It was on the Vietnam war. I love our troops and know DD needs to learn as much as possible about it but that is seriously not a favorite subject for me.

And poo on DSS! They would fall over if they ever came here, although we are down to around 50 Guinea Pigs in the house now. Talk about families not understanding! That is one reason my Mom wanted to go live with my sister after a year here with me. I don't get it.....

I am still cracking up over duck wax. I keep thinking of the "sex wax" bumper stickers. We saw one last week. My daughters could not believe it was a real product. (It's surfboard wax, in case you are as clueless as I was a few years back.)

Ok, long involved story that probably isn't as funny in the retelling. Hubby and I met in the SCA. (www.sca.org). A lady asked on our area list "Can I bring my pet duck to the camping event this weekend?"

A guy answered back, "Sure, I'll bring my grill..."

A different lady replied, "OMG, please don't try to grill a duck. It resembles an oil platform going up..."

We had duck jokes for a week. I enjoyed it. Most everytime somebody on BYC mentions cooking duck, I have a vision of a mini-oil platform in my backyard on fire.

Did that sound amusing at all? If not, my excuses are it's early and you can't see my hand gestures when I tell it. Lol. Have a warm day, everybody!

Babies! That is awesome!
I have chicks hatching every week, regardless of my vow to not hatch for myself. I did put about 40 of Debra's and Donna's in the hatcher last night. I felt good knowing they were not mine.

I raise marans but I don't show my birds. I don't raise them for show, I breed what I like. Some of my birds have been show quality but sometimes the pet quality birds are my favorite. The whole show circuit would take the fun out of it for me.

I don't plan to show either. I don't have the time. But I have been selling eggs around the country. Not sure I want to deal with unhappy customers if something isn't perfect. My stock is very good but not perfect.

The biggest problem with the marans seems to be the crosses out there with Penedesenca in them. I am not sure how so many of these crosses got out there but people bred the Penedesenca to the Marans to increase the darkness in their eggs from what I am understanding. We recently hatched some eggs we purchased off ebay from such a cross not knowing it and the chicks do have funky combs and are very aggressive and flighty. The eggs were not a nice deep chocolate either but a cloudy dark egg. I can say this because this past week we hatched some marans chicks from another breeder, the eggs were beautiful and the chicks are so mellow and sweet. We have not had the problems with these chicks at all that we had with the first and they have very pretty straight little combs. I so hope they do not turn flighty. We are going to cull all the roos in the first batch and put the hens in the laying flock--of course we only have 3 or 4 hens from that batch.

I really like the marans eggs and would really like to have a nice flock of them but it is turning into more work than I thought it would. We do not show but I do like to sell eggs from my birds.

I need them to come to my house and move my coop back about 5 feet so I can encircle my (huge) dog run around it!!! Seriously!!!!

Coop door was shut when we got home last night and I thought my friend came and shut it. But the chickens spent the night outside and I can't find 1 guinea and I only found the wing of my last blrw pullet. Waaaahhhh!!! Stupid me, I should have checked and done a head count
