After 20mins of play they all slept and slept and slept...

Just wanted pass along a story shared in the SC Chicken/Duck Facebook group. I couldn't look at the pictures again to download and attach here. I don't know who is at fault, but just something to think about.

"In May I ordered 100 chicks and 20 turkey poults from Cackle Hatchery in Lebanon, MO. They were due to arrive this morning at the post office. They arrived this morning at the Lamar, SC post office so I went to pick them up.

The first thing to hit me when I walked into the post office, which is a fairly large building, was the fact that they had an obvious sewage backup problem. "My goodness, how do you keep the place open like that? Well, let me pick up my birds and get out of this place."

I went to the counter and the woman, who is familiar with me asked me, "Are you here for chicks?" I said, "Yes." She said, "I have not opened the box but I looked through the side and some are dead." I said, "Well, that sometimes happens in transport; they usually send a few to make up for that." As we went to check the order before leaving she said, "And they smell awful." This woman was obviously upset. As we were walking to the back of this fairly large post office I could not help but to notice the sewage smell was getting worse. All of a sudden it hit me; I asked, “Is that smell my chicks?” The answer was, “Yes.”

I immediately opened the box of chicks and slammed the lid down in horror. The sight and the smell were horrific. I immediately called Cackle Hatchery to tell them what I saw and to explain that I would be rejecting the shipment. They were appalled. “Why would you do that?” I said, because most of them are dead and they are a rotting mass. I will have them shipped back to you.” I felt badly about this because of course, the rest will die during the return trip. I told this little smart mouth that I would accept these and try to save what was left if they credited me the difference or sent me a new set of birds. I was advised that that would not happen; they would only replace the few dead ones. I tried to explain there was not just a few dead ones.

Finally, I was transferred to the office manager, “Christie”. This woman was a trip. She insisted it was not their fault. The post office must have killed them. I had my phone on speaker so the postal worker heard this and was not at all happy. I tried to explain to Christie that I was not going to pay for rotting birds and I wanted a refund. I emailed her photos of the birds. She was rude, dense and very frustrating. She told me the birds were sent on the day they were hatched. However, herein is a problem. Baby chicks are provided for by God. He gives each chick a three day supply of food and water in a little sac in their abdomen. These birds were so hungry they attacked my wife’s finger as soon as she put it in the box to pull out potential survivors. I had to run over to the Piggly Wiggly and buy some ground corn meal to feed them and when I put that into the box they went crazy for food. Finally after 40 minutes of arguing with Christie and her telling me I could not send them back because "It is illegal to send dead animals through the mail and you would not be so cruel as to let the post office throw the surviving chicks in the garbage, would you?", she relented. She told me I could not understand common sense, she would never allow me to buy from them again (but I was the one who could not understand common sense?) and that she hoped I enjoyed the free birds and could find a company that would supply me with birds that lived. Of course, she told me, I would have to pay for the supplies I ordered, “since they didn’t die.” Of course I was willing to pay for the supplies; I’m not a thief.

Now folks, I am curious; how many of you would have accepted delivery of these birds and not demanded full reparations on the birds. Don’t answer until you look at the photos of what greeted us and imagine the smell. For the record, 84 out of 100 chicks were dead and rotting and 4 out of 20 turkey poults are not yet dead. However, at least three of the remaining chicks will be dead by this evening. I do not recommend Cackle Hatchery."
