I thought about joining in but I have only 4 eggs saved right now. I set a dz about 2 days ago. I set when I have them.
I don't like to hatch such small hatches as only 4. Though I will add babies to older groups I like to make sure they have a friend for the first week at least so if only 1 hatches out of 4 then I will have to cuddle and spoil the lone chick. That could get ugly as I would not want to put it out in the brooder with the others later. LOL My hatches usually go well but just when you think you will have several....something happens.

It was only 32 here this morning so I did not have to bust ice off of water. It was very nice!

Hi phoneman... I have RIR and BO and silkies and just got some Frizzles from Dipsy. I am looking at getting some red or black star this year but haven't decided yet. Not selling eggs or chicks as of yet but ya never know...I have frizzle eggs in the bator right now. So the next question is what do you have? I have been looking at the pic of the Red Star and silkie cross on the home page...someone convince me I don't need that..lol

Lisa I just had visions of those NN running around with little bitty mufflers on to keep their necks warm.

Raining here this am but at least not as cold but tomorrow and monday I am not looking forward too..but the homemade water heater works great!

I have 15 in the bator as of now but I doubt if they will wait until new years day...I figure they will come in on new years eve am...so I didn't join the thread...

My head silkie laid a "shelless" egg this am...(yuck) I know that happens but I sure do hate it..

Are you raising red and black stars Dominicker? If so how do you like them...and how is egg production? Hey you are suppose to be talking me out of them not enabling!

Snick,

What can I say?!? I'm addicted, too! LOL I'm wanting to get lots more but don't have the coop space to get more than 5 more right now. I have a red sexlink and a black sexlink. They are very docile, talkative, and lay really big brown eggs. They slack off in production in the winter/dark months, but still lay about 1 or 2 per week. In the sping/summer/early fall when the weather is still warm like around the south, haha, they lay just about everyday!! The red like to be held and talked to and she comes running up if she thinks you have treats. The black is a little more timid but still comes around...she's only 6 months old tho.

I have a RIR roo to mate with a Delaware (to make rsl) and Barred Rock (to make bsl). Hope to get a SLW soon to produced another strain of Red Star.

I never thought about breeding my Silkie to a red star or a black star but that would be neat.
I have a Dominiker/Silkie mix and she bossy but a good layer of large brown eggs. And every accidental chick I hatch from her is a girl. I have no desire to make that cross again though.

I did cross a Delaware roo over RIR hens, not for sex links since I don't care to know if they are boys or girls to start with, but instead for another good egg layer. So far they are looking like Dels and they look like girls but they are only 5 weeks old.

thanks for the info dipsy. that would be great so around about new years day you should have plenty of chicks. i am very interrrested in getting some nn and ee to add to my collection. how old are they when you let them go?? i am new at chickens so i have to ask questions and read posts. yep i was reading about heated tin waterers and i made one. i went to lowes and got a light socket that plugs into a outlet $2.50 and a drop cord $1.50 = $4.00 and i found the bulb and tin laying around. with a little reaserch i saved about $30.00 thank you all for the posts E
