OMG! They closed Greenville county schools!
And Spartanburg county is on a 2 hr delay.
For pete's sake it better be bad in other places because it was dry as a bone when I got up at 7 am. We are getting a little rain now but still it is not bad. Maybe the bridges are icy. But to close the schools?????
And the only reason I even looked it up on the computer was to check since my neighbor usually leaves before us and she was still home. I thought hummmm.......better check report. DD had already gone out to the car and was warming it up. Geez! Who'd a figured?

Well, out to do chores then.......stay warm everyone!

Thanks for posting, Nadine! I was about to go hop in the shower and then get the kids ready. I guess maybe in the northern part of the county it's worse? Dunno. They probably just want to keep the buses off the roads. I hate having to make up missed days, though.

It was nice to go out to the coop and not find frozen water!

It is dry as a bone here and actually warmer than it has been in days. I woke up to get the kids up for school and checked the news- saw the schools were on a delay (we're in Dist. 2) and thought to myself "dang! this is going to be another cold morning to take care of the chickens." So I bundled up and headed outside and couldn't believe it. I was all ready to put de-icer on the sidewalk and driveway. lol I had brought in the waterer last night so I just filled it up and took it out there- unleashed the hens and we were good to go. I did get a little surprise in the coop this morning though. My BO has still been broody so I've been letting her hang out because, well, I feel bad about trying to break her of it. This morning, I looked in on her and there was a chicken (my RIR) BEHIND her in the nesting box. I tried to shoo her out but she just looked at me and growled. So I went to grab some leather gloves and I went back and pulled her out and darn if there weren't 3 green eggs in her box. I got the RIR out and grabbed the eggs. I feel like such a fool- I just thought she was sitting there on an empty nest and there were 3 eggs under her. Is she stealing them from another nesting box? I got a green egg from the box next to hers yesterday. Surely, the EE isn't getting into her box to lay, right? I guess that I am going to have to break her of the broodiness and/or keep a better eye on what is going on underneath her.

And I want to add my heck yeahs to the chorus- it is so nice to be able to talk about freezing my tail off and not have someone else (cough cough my husband who is in Canada right now) tell me how it is 25 degrees below (celsius). If it's cold, it's cold- I don't care where you are!

I bundled up, too, to go outside but once I was out it was only a little chilly with a sprinkling of rain. It did ice up where the rain was dripping off the tractors but not too bad. I actually got a little warm while working. AND YES, it was great not to have to break ice off the water containers!

I am only 15 minutes from the NC line. You can see the NC from my deck and we are Dist. 1 but I was amazed at the delay. It actually was icy here at 10 am where as at 8 am it was dry. But let it snow a few inches and they have to think about closing schools. I seldom pay attention anymore. I take my kid when I want to. I haven't even gotten her there yet today. I am about to take her for an exam she has to take but I wasn't going to change my schedule for the school system. And yes, I am one of those parents that takes her child out of school to go on a vacation. I figure we see more and do more in a week than she learns in a semester at school, sometimes.

Anywho, it is raining more now outside but the chickens seem comfortable. Ducks are all napping and the LGD is flopped out sound asleep in it all. I am still wearing thermals!

Ah, so you are in the northern part of the county! I'm way down south near Fountain Inn and Simpsonville. I went to collect eggs around 11:30 and the flock were all grumbling and crowing at me, so I felt sorry for them and let them out to play. We normally only let them out if someone is home and I was unsure if the kids and I were going to run a few errands today, but I decided against it- it's good" stay home and snuggle up by the fire" weather. So now the chickies are having a great time doing their usual foraging. Maybe they are finding some worms! Last time it rained they played keep-away with a frog. Poor frog.

Just in from checking the chicks in the new coop....DH is now calling it the chickmahall

I worked last night so he was in charge of the chickens...so he put up a chicken cam (we usually use it for the horses in the barn if we have to stall one for illness or such) Interesting to see what those chickens do when we aren't there

Anyway they all seem to enjoy the new digs.

I am enjoying the warmer temps today...at least I didn't have to bundle up to go check on the animals. Hope you all in the upstate are fairing well. Is it spring yet?

Lisa...do you remember about how old the babies were and the hens? Just a rough estimate would be great..I know you probably told me but my mind is gone

Today it almost feels like spring!
Thank the Lord, it is soooo much nicer!
I was shedding clothes while doing chores and hear it should make it to 50! Wooohooo...a heat wave!

Beautiful day yesterday and today here too! I wish there'd been time to get more done, but mostly just catch-up from when the weather was lousy.
Then the younger d'lings in brooders made a disaster of their brooder and needed a bath, then blowdrying --- the blowdryer tripped a breaker... and couldn't get the gfci to reset (the incubators and hatcher are also on that circuit).
The husband had to go 'all electrician' on me and replaced the whole business and lectured me on plugging too many things into one outlet, hahaha.

Hi Margie! The tiny black Frizz hen was spring hatch, the blue Frizz hen was '09 hatch. The chicks are 8-ish weeks old (give or take a couple weeks).
Wish I could be more exact.
