Phoneman: where are you located in sumter. i am at the corner of hwy401 and brewington rd. welcome to byc

I live off of North 261 near Shaw AFB. Thanks for the welcome to BYC. What a great site and forum! I just started and have 22 TSC mixed pullets...RiR, Leghorn, buff somethings or another, 2 barred rocks, and 6 Black something or anothers. 22-total, but I have a feeling I may have up to 5 roos that will need to be rehomed when confirmed.

I have a chicken question - a customer has asked me about feeding her chickens rice and couscous. I know I've fed couscous to my canaries and it's a great way to wean chicks or give the birds vitamins, meds or just extra energy. Any reason we shouldn't feed rice or couscous to chickens? I'm assuming it would be cooked/soaked, but I'll need to ask that. Anybody have an opinion to share?

I have a friend in AZ that feeds couscous to her hens. Not sure how much or if it changes anything in their laying. I would expect not though, as long as it isn't too much. She seems to have good results but probably doesn't give them too much at once or very often. She has a very small place.

I feed rice all the time. It seems I can't learn how to cook a small amount. Family doesn't like it and I often forget and make plenty but then I have lots left over. I think cooked rice is a great extra to add a few times a week. I sure like it!

Snick, my father in North Charleston would say, "ONLY 26 plants?". But then we are tomato snobs. He plants more than a dozen varieties with at least four plants of each. He usually forces me to take started plants home when I do my Spring Break visit.

At our old place, I worked to make my garden bigger every year until it got to 14' by 25'. Hubby was having kittens over my "huge" garden. I felt it was close to right. Dad visited and said, "Dang, that's a small garden plot!"

Your birds will love the tomatoes. Our first Summer in the new house I decided I wasn't leaving tomatoes at the old house for Mr. Groundhog to get fatter on. (Much foul language avoided) thing bit off half my cucumber plants that barely had leaves on them! Aargh! Anyway, I'd walk into the backyard with a bucket or pan and my Original Five would come running. I'd throw down the bug-bit and split tomatoes that the family couldn't eat. Talk about stink eye! I swear they were saying, "We liked them the first week. They were good the second week. Tomatoes are no longer a treat, woman!"

As far as keeping the chicks out of the garden: all the chickens LOVED my one squash plant. They pulled off leaves and blossoms. I finally put a poultry net cage around it.

No one in the family wanted to eat the two butternut squash. I should have let the birds eat the dang thing.

My 2nd ever hatch has just begun!

I've got 3 BLRW, 6 B/B/S Orps, and 8 Blue Copper Marans in there. (not really sure how many actutally are developed outta the Marans bc they're so darn hard to see in!) Wish me luck! My first hatch didn't go great so I'm hoping for better results from this one!
