SO sorry for those of u that lost chicks last night. Fortunately for me mine are still in their garage coop, I haven't been able to work on new pen & coop lately. And my day olds are to arrive tomorrow.I was hoping they would make it today but

I finally had my luck run out though. After a year of no illnesses or emergencies 3 of my four pullets got bumblefoot.

last day I had them in their winter quarters(old dog pen) instead of out in the pasture, I noticed they had dug past the mulch, past the dirt down to digging up rocks. It looked like eggs all over the pen. Luckily I hold them fairly frequently and check them over weekly.They weren't limping or off their feed or anything.So I was repairing the worst damage on two of them tonight and I'll get the one just barely started tomorrow. Good thing I already have the brooder set up.

I love honey. I make a tea out of it to help with weight loss..but it's a very slow weight loss. I haven't seen any tetratints at the Columbia or Newberry TSC.

Amy, I will tell my bee ladies they are doing a great job and to keep up the good work.

Creamed honey is a spreadable form of honey. All honey will granulate at some point depending on the nectar source.
With creamed honey, I encourage the granulation to start and control the process so that the honey is creamy instead of grainy (sp?)

Lauren, how are the chicks?

I am not hatching anything right now. Just got a little tired of babies. I know that is hard to believe.

I still have my orpington breeding pens set up if anyone wants eggs. One pen has a black roo over 4 splash hens which
has been hatching 100 % blue chicks.
I may have some pairs or trios for sale a little later on.

It is 37 at my house.

Glad I covered the tomato and pepper plants up last night.

Off to let the chickens and guineas out.
They may have their long johns on.

Bumblefoot is where the birds get a small cut or scrape on their foot and bacteria gets in and sets up. It causes a big lump on the foot and they often limp with it. it doesn't usually bust open but instead gets a hard core with soft stuff around it. (Hope I am explaining that correctly)
I have a GLW hen that gets it every year. The first year I dug out the core but since she hasn't limped on it since, even when it comes back, I do not do that anymore. She is probably scared to limp in front of me. My surgical skills leave a lot to be desired.
The funny thing is this hen is in the free range flock all the time, never been caged but I think it can happen to any animal if they are exposed to the bacteria while having a scrape on their foot. Guinea Pigs get it if kept on wire bottom cages. We have never had a piggie with it.

Glad to see so many fellow SC chicken keepers! We live in the Upstate and are just getting back into it ourselves. I had an egg business in junior high with 45 Rhode Islands and Black Sexlinks, but recently my mom has been the only one with chickens. We have seven 4-week-old Golden Comets right now, and there's something so satisfying about seeing these little ladies grow and knowing that they'll be giving us eggs in just a few months.

DH has scrounged around and found me some nice scrap wood and started building one thing I asked for at least..........bachelor pens for silkies! Small A-frame Tractors I can move around the yard...could even use them to house some of my lil OEGs or even teenagers! Or anything

I told him I need at least 5 just for my silkies

It will be a slow process to get them done though

He is working on it when he isn't too tired...started monday and frame is done so far. The wood is actually what is used on bundles of plywood to basically protect the plywood from bends & breaks etc.........

Nicole & I painted that part orange.... actually "faded clay".........$1.50 paint

We used all of that color so I gotta figure out what to paint the rest of it. Maybe a brownish color. Which is the bigger can in the pic

The right side to the piece that is first there will be wood..........along with that end & other side so they have a shelter from weather......rest will be wire. It is pretty good sized - I sat my fat tail inside and painted the frame

Guess I need to get off my butt and spray the cracks in my drive & kill weeds/grass
