Joy, I do have lavender silkies. I have 8 pure lavs and 7 splits. One of them finally started laying! Since they're all the same age, we should have more soon. I put the first week's worth of eggs in the bator to see if they're fertile. So I should have something for you when you're ready! I have three lav split cockerals right now and I really only need one if you want an older one.

Your friend is probably talking about a Showgirl. They are naked neck Silkies. You're right! They were bred with Turkens (naked neck) I think. They have a silkie body with a long ole naked neck. Some showgirls have a completely naked neck and some (the bow ties) have some fluff around their neck like a tie. I had one showgirl and that boy was mean and ugly. I decided not to go in that direction. I've seen some really, really ugly ones and some that are kind of pretty. All in the eyes of the beholder!

I should have read further before replying !

One of those days already for me.

Off to worm the goats.........

After taking off the head I cut the skin from neck to mid abdomen, peel back the skin with the feathers still on and fillet out the breast meat like filleting a fish. (Boy, those years of vet tech work and helping in surgery come in handy!)
Then DH takes the skin off of the legs and takes off the "wheels" (leg quarters). That is all we ever eat from a chicken so the rest goes to the cats or we bury it in the garden or composting.
However, the dogs and cats just keep digging them up and dragging them off so we have to bury pretty deep and if the ground is hard we just give up and let the animals have their enjoyment. Also the chickens will come up and try to eat some of it. Though they do it more in the winter than in the summer.

Ok somebody said more pics~ here's my grown babies~ but all the fuzz on this thread is making me green with envy though~ I want more fuzzy butts around

Diane, I'm sorry that you lost one of your girls! I know that we have so many varmints around that would like to have a chicken. We're going to build our coop like a safe. Right now our two are still living in their exended brooder in the garage.

Speaking of which, I'm thinking that I'm going to be in the market for some pullets in a few weeks, preferably something that lays colored eggs. It's looking like I have two cockerals., since they've started practicing duets together at sunup. I only started with three chicks.

hummmm that makes sense to do it that way and would sure ease up freezer space.. .. there really isn't any reason for the whole carcus unless making stock or broth anyway.. hummmm very interesting.. when it comes time I might have to call you and have you talk me thru the first one.. I don't plan on having to "harvest " and meat any time soon .. though...

thanks

GOT YOGURT?

I've been wanting to get a picture of their milk mustaches!

I've talked to a lot of people who have Showgirls and said they were great. Mine was a mean rascal which really surprised me since it's half silkie! It would fight anything and anyone. Whew.... I wouldn't go by that though. It's just like Polish. Half the people I talk to love them and the other half don't. Give it a shot!
