Another question. When it gets hot like this, is it normal for chickens to not have any appetite? Seems like the rooster is really the only one eating the feed. The hens in the cage with him, I think they eat just so they can get some. The other 3 hens, in the other cage, didn't even touch their nice ripe tomato.

Mine won't eat anything between the hours of 9am and 7pm. Maybe a bug occasionally but nothing else.

ETA: If you are worried about them, you should consider separating them. I have had a couple of piggy roosters and the hens really didn't eat much until I removed him.

Wow...chickens are like kids huh. Don't come with instructions. Mine look and act healthy enough, so I am not fretting over them. Just a curiosity thing.

Hey Pink - I see that you homeschool, sounds like you need to add agriculture into your curriculum.

My 16 year old has a regular job, right here on my farm filling chicken drinkers everyday and helping unload the food weekly. Both of my boys help wash and box eggs. The chickens are mine but the boys are always with me so they're learning a lot. We homeschool too and helping out around the farm is a small price to pay for them to get to stay home for school everyday. Good luck with your birds.

I so agree but tel that to a hormpnal 13yr old boy who "knows Everything" adn who the world revolves around>>> ( I did not teach him that.. he came up with that one all on his own.. and a 17 yr old girl who is trying to ballance school. boyfriend.. and guy friends, girl friends, and be colege prep and needs a job to help me pay for her truck/ahhhhh//
neigher if them want to help me which really sux....big time.. but karma is tough and they'll both get bit back

Oh my goodness, if my chickens didn't go for a tomato I would really be worried about them. Mine are eating plenty - probably more than they should be with all the seeds and bugs available. And when I go out the door they're waiting for me to see what goodies are coming their way today. They fight over the tomatoes. Even in 110 degree heat, the girls come running for veggies.

Well,I keep a close eye on them all. I think it might just be too hot for them to want much of anything. I gave them all a bowl of ice water today, to go with the chunk of ice in the milk cartons I give them daily. We don't get alot of fruits and veggies yet, but I give them all I can spare. And of course, bugs etc.

I have been on the incubation thread and a lot are doing it at 4-7 days. I am like noooooooooooo don't do it til day 10 if you have to!

I know that when I tried to teach myself about candling, if I was going to throw it out, I cracked it open. Unfortunately I could see little dark spot that was a developing chick in a couple of eggs.

Never throw anything out until day 18.

I am considering sending a guide on incubation with eggs...........No candling til day 18 for chicken eggs. Day 10 if you are that curious. Days 1-18 open the bator daily to check for bad smells.

Gabbard Farms did have a link for a free e-book on their website about incubation. I have given that link to several people. It was very informative and I haven't had the time to put one together on my website yet. It's on my priority list .... but not sure what page of the list it's on.

Anyway, Gabbard's was in the process of publishing a book to sell so not sure if they're still offering that for free.

I changed it this morning.....was tired of seeing the yellow chick, although it did make my own posts easier to spot
