South Carolina

It was a big night for my pullets I've raised out in the barn. I put them with my layers in the big girl coop tonight! They aren't going to know what to think. Poor things have been in an indoor barn stall since they were little chicks, so it'll definately be different for them. I was down to 4 layers, and added 5 pullets so I'm not too worried about them getting picked on too much. Other than my dominique hen most of the others are pretty sweet. Nellie the dominique will probably bully them but they outnumber her. Some of them are already bigger than her too

How long do you typically let chickens get used to their new digs before letting them free range? I read 6 wks somewhere I think. I guess my 4 girls that have been out there will have to wait for the others to get used to it before I let them free range again.

And that is a GREAT price. Are you sure you're not just down the road from Bamburg? I would gladly pay $4 each and buy all you have. AND share with Amy (who by the way surely seems to be happy with these guineas she didn't really want to start with).

Just made the rounds and checked on everyone. Boy I got some piggy roos! That's alright though. I just look at them and shake my head knowing that soon as it cools off a bit, they will be headed to freezer camp. If it wasn't so hot I would go ahead and take them on a little trip to the other side of the yard..... Already in my head, I"m planning on how things will get rearranged once they are gone. I will have room for everyone and DH won't have to build anything until next spring!

Joy, I just did a mapquest--do you mean Bamberg? If so it is a long ways from me--it is just below Columbia so we are talking a couple of hours still down to my part of the world. I wish it was closer-- these keets would go in a road trip but with a two year old I do not wonder that far from home very often. Darn!!!

I have asked our local feed store owner if we could have a poultry swap at her store(she has some nice big trees outside around the store). And she is for it. Problem is I really do not know if we have that many chicken/poultry people here interested. Got to send the feelers out around here and see if anyone would be interested....

I know the road trip would be more than I could handle so that is why I went for eggs instead.

I would have loved to have made a road trip with some great BYC friends for keets and whatever else we could find! But it is a long trip. I did it once and can't do it again. After 9 hours in a cargo van with lots of chickens and many stops picking up and dropping off I thought I had lost my mind. And the smell almost did us all in!
