Gavin, I missed not seeing you and Allison yesterday. You two are such fun and enjoy the chickens so much!
How did your Silkie do in the show? Did you learn a good bit from it?

Maybe one day I can get a couple eggs and pass them through the chicken fairy...when I first met her I thought she was harsh on the price of birds...I have spent good money on a few of mine but I know what I can get out of them...but then I saw what she was talking about on price and sometimes you love a breed but just dont have that kind of money...I havent spent THAT much on a bird!!!

I just saw where a doz choc orph project eggs went for $426....I have the wrong color orphs!!!

And watch her see all this and bust us! HEHE...she was neat to meet...I am just not a fan of no tail...lol

Eggs from Araucanas are very difficult to hatch. There is a lethal gene involved and I always, always breed rumpless to rumpless. A lot of folks mix in EE's for tails to try and improve fertility. Not true Araucanas then though. I do not breed tufted to tufted though so I cut out the death rate a bit. But I have gotten a higher percentage of dead in shell this year than I ever have. Same bunch of birds except for a new pullet I added. I probably should have kept another flock for genetic diversity but I have only so much time and energy to care for the ones I already have. They don't sell as well as the others so when people wanted them I sold them. They are awesome but like game birds and would sleep up in trees if given the chance.

No I don't think we got to meet! I unfortunately didn't really get to meet anyone but I did have such a good time! I brought my mom with me and she LOVED the silkies! I may have to get one someday just so she can come visit it! Was Mary Bell at the show? I tried to keep an eye out for her but never saw her.

Oh Joy, that would be great for you to get the garage and get that barn going! You need the extra room so you can expand!

I am just encouraging you to get more birds, aren't I?

Actually, you could move a lot of them around and always have space for new chickies and have a little hospital ward and more brooders and lots and lots of new things could happen. So much fun!

Thanks Amy but I need NO encouragement. I just added 90 (NINETY) hens to my layer flock.

A friend of mine is getting out of the egg business and I know these birds. He just raised them from chicks this year and I need more eggs so I couldn't pass it up. I moved the last 50 in last night and banded them all. Now I really NEED that barn as I've got my layers stuck everywhere! I even added some to the peafowl yard and my bantam cochin pen. I rationalized that the layers would help keep those tiny cochins warm until I can get them a better place. See how I think? I don't think the chicken therapy is helping my insanity.

I should also say that my greenhouse is already full of chicks too.

Yes Lauren, I was there. Sorry I did not see you.
I spent a lot of time admiring Sandy (Bat Cave Silkies) birds.

Also spent time talking bees with Carol Hipp. (spelling?)

I'm happy Gavins girl was a winner. She is adorable.

Gavin and Allison saved me some eggs. They go in the incubator today.
I had 15 silkies hatch yesterday. 1 was weak and did not make it overnite.

The rest look great. I have whites, partridges, buffs, 1 splash and 1 black.

Whew.... just got caught up. I'm sick with a cold and it's been a weekend packed with parties. Which of course has made me feel worse. And on top of all that, our offer fell through.

Jerks. After negotiating all day Friday, we were just about at an agreement and they decided they're not sure if they want to buy a house. This is strange since he said he's taken a job here with the hospital and they live in TN. Oh, well. I was really upset on Saturday but I'd rather know now than have it fall apart a week before closing.

I love all the show pictures! I really need to go to one sometime.
