Sometimes young pullets that just started laying will lay unusual shaped/colored/textured eggs. It's kind of like their system is just getting the hang of things and it takes a while to get it right. It can also happen towards the end of the laying cycle when they're going into a molt and getting ready to take a break from laying. Sometimes a hen can be spooked while on the nest and it changes the egg a bit if she holds off laying her egg. It seems the darkest egg layers sometimes have ink jet issues leaving globs of color. I have no idea why and it doesn't happen often here but I have seen it. Not sure what else to tell you, I love the speckled eggs. And my customers seem to love the oddball shapes.

I just don't understand why she doesn't believe that egg came from a spotted chicken! Sounds reasonable, right????

If you have a rumpless, pea combed Araucana then it would only lay a blue egg. Genetically, they can only lay a blue egg or at the least, a blue/green egg. A Easter Egger can lay a brown egg but it doesn't matter which one laid it, I can tell you why it looks the way it does.

Chickens "paint" their eggs last after they make them and often young girls are still getting those paint jets to working correctly so the "paint" will often blotch or speckle.
You have painted, I am sure, with a can of paint. You know how that can start out. Spitting, too much, too little....yadda, yadda...but then you smooth out and find the rhythm. The girls are the same.
Now some breeds do lay blotched or speckled eggs and some hens within breeds will always do the same color coating. Welsummers and Marans are two that are the top of my sleepy head right now.

LoL

Thanks for the reply! I kinda thought the same since it looked like ink dots on the brown. And, I have been stealing the mother-in-laws turnips the past two weeks and figured the turnips were given them some color. Her turnips...my yard....hehehehe

OK I have a mean rooster also...BUT he's a good rooster. He protects his girls and anything in the backyard.even the 18yr old cat...WELL except me and if my dad stops by. He hates us!! But I let my girls/and him free range in my fenced in yard(from 1 til dark)(dad gets off at 1 and stops by to let them out) and YES the rooster still trys to get him too... HAHAHHA!!! I Have gotten into a flipflop fight too...And I have kicked him in the chest about 10ft. and I've chased him to the neighbors laughter!!!! He's still an A$$, but I've grown to love his Blue Butt and it's all good..Oh his pic is my avatar!!!

So what I'm trying to say is If he does his job then oh let him be!!! I have...He's got me twice in the back of the leg, didn't hurt but he's about 15lbs and almost may me fall...But Like i said he does his job so FOR now he will stay, and he's Purdy!!! lol !!!

I think he was protecting his girl when he bit me...as I was trying to pick her up. He's gonna have to learn his lesson soon though! He's such a handsome boy..I'd hate to have to put him in the freezer!

Here's the culprit: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/51428_dsc_0196.jpg

Pretty bird. I'm surprised he has an attitude! I have a BLRW and he's got to be the most mellow rooster. I've so far been blessed with GREAT roos and all my large fowl ones live together peacefully. The only one I had that was a devil was a cochin and I sold him. Oh, Toffee the RIR I had had an attitude problem. Bit me and flogged me a lot, but I just kicked the crud out of him. That worked well.

He'll be getting a boot to the chest next time he tries anything. What makes me mad is I've raised him since he hatched. He was one that I incubated. Little jerk...anyways hopefully he'll get his attitude straightened out or he can be very easily replaced! lol

Roosters are a dime a dz so they can be replaced if they are hateful. I have 2 BLRW and remind Foley all the time he better be a good boy but he has never made a move to be mean to me. I have picked up his hens plenty but he is only concerned and never aggressive. The other roo is just as nice.
There is no telling how many BLRW roos I have growing up. It is hard to put them in the killing cone but if they don't sell that is where they go. I often wonder why God gave us so many roos but I guess he knew we had to eat.

I am sure I will have some boys growing up.
I can usually tell the boys from girls at 4 weeks old. I don't understand why some people have problems with them but like Silkies I guess it takes a practiced eye and knowing poultry to be able to identify them. The Wyandottes are pretty easy to sex, though I find the GL and SL a lot easier. Of course, it helps that Jerry, my SL roo, is throwing a lot of girls, too.

The BLRW are Jerry Foley birds so you know you will get great quality.

Ok....the wife has been collecting the eggs and she showed me a brown egg with dark brown spots. I told her it came from the spotted chicken...which didn't fly well. My thought is it came from an araucana. Any help here? She showed me a second one that looked more to be a bad shell, in that the egg was brown, but was blotchy. Not as pronounced with the dark "freckles."

ccw2005, thought of you this morning while I was collecting eggs!
