Oh yeah, what Susanne says is right. I have never had to do any trimming on my Silkies and I get tons of fertile eggs. Everything I have set and everything that they have sat on hatches.
And though Miss Kimberly says hers need more fluff, the roo I got from her has always given me great fertility with his ladies and his brother is the one that took a BOV at the show the other week so I am sure he isn't lacking too much in the fluff butt department!

Dag gone it is cold outside this morning! Good thing they have fluff butts! I did the minimum and am back in for some gloves!

I second the Cold part and I am closer to the coast. I can only imagine what it is like up there. I took my daughters puppy out for a potty break and ended up picking her up and putting her in my coat and carrying her around until I did my chores. She is not real tiny either but boy, did she enjoy watching all the chickens from a safe place!

Since becoming a BYC'er I hardly ever go on FB but ya'll got me curious so I went on and replied to some posts just to antagonize...nooo I wouldn't do something like that!

LOL I read all that this morning on the FB page and was like"You go, girl!" You see I had to respond. But obviously they ain't none too bright on there because they have no idea that Clemson is not the chicken police! That shows you how ignorant some "gamebird" owners are. I hesitate to say the other word as it causes problems here on BYC. I do love the little gamebirds but not some of the owners. These people are not smart enough to really know the laws that are written in SC. I posted the link so they could read it for themselves but it looks like they did not do it.

Geez! My hands are so cold I can barely type! And I am tickled by what Patsy wrote.

Nope. Never have. Yet. Last spring I was getting one unfertile egg from a pen & 4 fertile eggs. After watching closely a couple of days, I realized the rooster (that Amy has now) just was not interested in that one girl. I traded her out to another pen. Within days, she had fertile eggs. She preferred the other rooster

LOL

If it came down to it, I would try AI before trimming. But that is just my preference of not wanting to trim my show or breeder birds.

Well, come on! I'm here every day now.

White is an off switch for color. You don't really know what is hiding underneath the white. You could get just about anything... especially if you don't know the history of your whites. You should be getting eggs. The only color silkie that takes longer than that are my buffs. My whites generally start laying at 6 months. If you start getting eggs, you have a rooster and NONE are fertile (and your silkies have a lot of fluff around their vent), then you might consider a trim. But I wouldn't mess with it until then. Just my opinion!

x2......... and if NONE of the eggs are fertile, you may want to switch roos

I am going to try to upload the pic of my splash reading that I was telling you about........maybe I can get to it today...seems my days have been beyond wonky lately.

I may read on for a bit but I think I won't post anything else for sale. If they want to use it for yakking about those type of hobby birds then fine but not with my input because they won't like what I have to say. I am glad SC outlawed it and am okay that it was a part of our HISTORY but that is just what it is now....history. People like that make me sick. I thought I was going to have a cow when he said you had to get a permit from Clemson but to go on and talk about this other stuff was too much.
And you do notice he could never prove anything about having to get a permit from Clemson or show anywhere that it states you will get fined $1500? People like that are what give chickens a bad name! For pete's sake!

So can a person sell chicken at a Farmers Market? I know you can sell eggs but I did not think you could sell any kind of livestock? NOw there I go....

Very nice!! And I like the Coral Blue guinea on the other side of the fence!!

I will post the guinea pics later tonight.

We would love to get some practice eggs just to try incubating before we actually try "good eggs". That sounds bad now that I type it out. Hope you know what I mean. We would be happy to return the chicks even, kind of like a surrogate hatcher if you will.

Thank you! I just came from the SC Group. I had to go see what all the fuss was about and boy did I get an eye full. I may keep it a little longer for amusement but I admit I have not visited it in over a week until today.

It was rather educational to hear what some had to say on there about what they were doing. I know we will always come across folks like that but I prefer not to rub elbows with people who can't even understand enough to know the laws in SC.

We'd love to come by and talk bees. When is the best time of year to get started? I think we keep saying Spring but maybe it doesn't have to be. My husband will be so excited! I can bring a couple silkies in exchange for bee keeping lessons!

Susanne, I love to talk about bees. You and your husband are always welcome.

It is usually best to get packages(2 or 3 lbs of bees with a queen) or nucs(4 or 5 frames with bees, brood, and a queen) in March/April/early May. Beekeeping has it own language.

There are several good books:
First Lessons in Beekeeping by Keith Delaplane (SC uses this one for it's Certified Beekeeping class)
Beekeeping for Dummies (NC uses this one for some of the Certified Beekeeping classes)
Backyard Beekeeper by Kim Flottum One of my favorites-has good pics

Check out your local beekeepers association. There are some dedicated people in that club. They will have a certified level/beginner class starting in Feb.

I will be glad to help you in any way I can. (especially if you bring silkies
